Yeah, basically.
Disable a ship, be careful not to destroy the special block, and jury-rig the block to your build using merge blocks.

I love the concept of reward blocks, but how do I use them..? I mean... so I explode a ship take it's drive core/item intact and then use merge blocks to make the ship I want?
