I went into the code and found that the cost to income ratio is about .005. For example the ammo plant costs $1000 and is -5 maintenance. Bringing the ratio to 0.01 works much better. So, for example, making the coal plant that costs 500 produce 5 income is fair and balanced (rather than the 3 income it currently has).

All functional buildings require about 3 maintenance just to have the basics. So the current $500 coal plant can not make any income as it requires 3 maintenance to have crew+supply+water+repairs. Making the coal plant give 5 income is a much better solution as it gives you some profit.

I like the idea of this mod but I wish the "buildings" were just modules without roofs or reserve space above them so we could integrate them into the base of towers or make our own custom roofs.

A decorative version of the 'Buy War Bonds' poster to put on the sides of our factories and some other propaganda posters would be nice. Really gives some flavor to the cities.

@ellet2001 He is trying to make a mod that has factories that produce gold. Since there are no such function in the game, he tries to make a double-negative cost. In other words, anything, a ship, tank, tower, has an upkeep. By inverting the upkeep, it should be possible to make it to make money, not spend it. A minus-minus is a plus, mathematically. But it doesnt seem to work, the upkeep is the same if you make it into a negative number.
Its a very good system, if it works, and a smart way of making it happen, but for some reason it seems that the cost doesnt change even if you change the number.
For example, you should be getting 5 gold, instead of paying upkeep of 1. But when changing it to -5, or --5 actually, it stays at 1.
So you should be paying less than zero, or making money, but you are not. Its going to be a gamechanger when it works, but it doesnt seem to work like it should.

It doesnt give -1 upkeep, it gives -1 income. Building a factory decreases income. Area income is unchanged, total income goes down by one.

it should give you -1 upkeep, which will equate to positive income when the game subtracts upkeep from income.

HEY! I like this mod, in so far as I have been able to use it, but I am confused by a few things. First, I have built a class of trade ship with a lot of trade good storage space (Woot!) but I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how to use this.... All nations in the world seem to be at war with each other, so that rules out trade with them, and flying it between my own cities produces no result.

tbh to balance this you should either decrease the price or increase the money these generate. Other mods that add commerce(such as CE)offer options that generate a load of money after only a couple of research bonuses.

Love how this mod is just a single addition to an element of the game expanding in one direction someone might choose, need more like this to further customize our campaigns! I also really like that the structures mostly require men to man them unlike some other economy expanding mods, which really makes you consider them as a real structure you can defend within/without. Awesome mod pic too, great work!
