because in FTD thats probably its best operational role, it was built to be balanced between looking like a star destroyer and being combat effective, cost was the other main factor, to make it truly a space ship it would need a lot more ion thrusters, this would mean it would be many realtime days before you could spawn it in game, this way you can actually use it in campaign rather than waiting till the end of the game to use it, I think it might have just enough space capability to mavuevre like a brick in space but Im fairly sure it cant get there on its own.
