If you have the GIMP, which is free, you need a vtf plugin to edit .vtf (valve texture file) files, which are the actual skins for these weapons. Just work with it, and you'll get something done. I'm not sure what'll happen, but you should be able to patch something together.

Well, try picking base colors for everything, like a gray-ish green to start for the wooden parts, then add on some other stuff like a stitching pattern or something, like patchwork. Then, for the metal portion, do something similar, or simply do the same pattern for all of it.

Not particularly good.
Here's why:
The normally-wooden parts are some mucus color, and the normally-metal parts are painted black.
