Sorry, I'm a total Morrowind noob. I never played long enough to leave the first town.
1: Keep a notepad, there are no quest markers in Morrowind
2: Combat is aids but there are diehards who swear by it. Put all your points into one weapon at the start of the game, and only swing at/near full stamina to maximize hit chance
3: The UESP is your friend
4: Learning how to cheese alchemy is a good idea
5: Download a bug fix mod off Nexus Mods because it sure has a lot of those. I recommend Morrowind code patch. Nothing more tragic than having a multiple hour save get absolutely destroyed and having to start over again.
This one is a freebie: Do not install mods in the middle of a playthrough. It WILL destroy your playthough eventually.
