Start new game with her race is not recommended, because her equipment like headgear and boots is not craftable.

Haven't been able to test it yet since I'm having trouble updating kenshi to experimental version but is she usable when playing a new game?

Just update kenshi game version to experimental. The version 1.0.53 can't load mods of 1.0.55
