It won't display death count in single player as the boss despawns after one death, so there's no point. However in multiplayer the death count should show, or if you'd prefer to show Time Alive (usually used with a mod that disables respawning in bossfights, which I prefer to play with) then you can select that for multiplayer.

didn't know you could scroll chat, guess terraria still has things to discover even after 3 years. being able to scroll chat fixes my main issue so no need to compress the text. thanks for the reply!

You can scroll up and down in the chat with your arrow keys whilst the chat is open if it gets cut off, I could make everything appear on a single line as well but I feel like it'd be harder to read like that.
