@binchcannon
Having any sort of construction material, even a feeble one such as this, freely available on Ice Sheet, is a quantum leap for gameplay in this biome. That means you can build structures, even fragile ones, without waiting, hoping and praying for traders to buy construction materials from (stone, steel, maybe wood).

As well as being able to reserve the stone for more permanent structures, the steel for crafting, the wood for furniture. I'm channeling both Ambiguous Amphibian's Ice Sheet challenge (Orange the cannibal) as well as Veequeue's 1000 days of Ice Sheet survival (both solo and multiperson) into this comment.

Only the lack of insects to fight keeps me away from an Ice Sheet run, but I'll do one one of these days.

The mod Worldbuilder by ferny now exists. And you can make your own planets to play on.

Rebranding this mod to focus exclusively on igloo bricks - that way subscribers aren't forced to accept all my other IceWorld content.

Updated for 1.6! Will be play testing to make sure that things are still balanced. Also working on another major feature.
CakeIzGood 15 Jul @ 8:54pm
Excited for a 1.6 update to this one for the new biome :)

Igloo walls will start melting if the "ambient temperature" of the wall is above 0C. Ambient temperature is a vanilla game concept that factors in the temperature of adjacent cells, so if one side of the wall is 20C and the other side is 0C, the wall will have an effective temperature of 10C and start melting. In my games I've actually found that my colonists are more comfortable in the winter because it's colder outside, so it allows for a warmer inside temperature without melting the igloo. In the summer where it's barely below freezing, you can't really have a heated igloo.

I'm definitely planning to verify the ambient temperature logic before updating this for 1.6 as things could have changed in the base game engine.

And by melting, i mean around 20 ish a day
Devonte 13 May @ 7:30pm
For some odd reason my igloos are melting? The inside is 20 degrees, but the outside (Which is ambient temperature i assumed) is well below 0C

Updated for 1.5!

@Arky - I had the same concerns when I implemented this. Looking through the code it seemed that the item deterioration loop was designed in order to minimize performance impacts, for instance by using an RNG trigger rather than a micro-counter to determine when an item should take damage, so I decided to leverage that same mechanic. Melting in my mod is essentially just another source of deterioration damage.
@Doctor Neetzow - I'm probably the wrong guy to ask about mods. I like to keep my games as vanilla as possible, and even now I only play with my own couple of mods. For a good time I'd recommend just turning down the temperature and settling near the poles.
Arky 11 Nov, 2023 @ 11:54am
How performance intensive it is if it has to check for melting every time?

Hey dear author, I want to first say thank you for taking upon yourself the endeavor to make an ice-biome gameplay friendly modpack.
I'm in love with the idea of surviving those since frostpunk.

I'd like to ask you 2 things:

1st) What are the configs you use/recomend to set up such gameplays in Rimworld (I'm realatively new to the game... added several mods, but never knew how to mess with game configs very much)

Pt 1/2
Doctor Neetzow 14 Oct, 2023 @ 7:55pm
2nd) I wanted to play 2 scenarios related to freezing landscapes, and I wonder if I'd need more mods for those:

A) An "snowball earth" scenario, with little to no wildlife scenario... probably only moss on the equator or something like that... Maybe fish?

B) An "nuclear winter" scenario, with just a few spots with "less radioactive" environment, but fronzen cold as a trade-off, with nuclear fallout places, and lots of ruins in the sententrional regions of the map.

>>>> In case it's not possible to set up such gameplays with existing vanilla/mods, would you consider picking at least one of those to your To-do list? Sorry for being a nuisance.

pt 2/2

Can you make this compatible with the Soil Relocation Framework? It allows for the collection/removal of Ice, as well, plus more.
Maya 8 Apr, 2023 @ 7:23pm
Might I suggest having the walls and possibly the bricks cool rooms down to just above freezing if you were to have them in a room on a warmer map? In theory this would help with food preservation for low tech starts in locations that experience seasons.

I'm getting an error between this, the expansion and dubs bad hygene. Log seems unavailable but here's the visual exception.

We will watch your career with great interest (for real makes me want to do a sheet ice play) love to see what this modpack does
binchcannon  [author] 22 Jan, 2023 @ 8:05am
@Vardath real igloos do require indoor and outdoor temps to be kept in balance and will melt if it's too hot indoors or not cold enough outdoors. What you're describing shouldn't be a problem on very cold maps, but for less cold weather you'd have to use a torch instead of a campfire or otherwise leave the door open. I am planning to add an oil lamp mod for those interested in cooking with less heat/alternative fuel sources.
Vardath 22 Jan, 2023 @ 4:55am
Can you make the walls only count outdoor temperature? Real igloos often have a fireplace and don't melt.
binchcannon  [author] 20 Jan, 2023 @ 12:48pm
@Miss Moss - you should be able to heat rooms made from igloo walls as long as the inside isn't warmer than the outside is cold. If it's 21C inside your igloo but only -10C outside, for instance, then your walls will gradually melt. You could open a door in that case to bring temperatures more into balance, or turn off your heaters periodically to chill the room and make repairs. This might seem tedious, but sea ice games tend to have a lot of idle time so this sort of temperature management gives players something extra to do. Long term you'll probably want to be replacing the heated portions of your base with more permanent materials like stone as those resources become available.

I'll admit that this gets a little wonky when you start making double-thick igloo walls. Definitely let me know if you have any feedback - I'm open to making tweaks if something seems off.
CORVOID 20 Jan, 2023 @ 11:33am
Does "ambient temperature" mean outdoor temperature, so I can heat rooms as normal?
MrTentacles 18 Jan, 2023 @ 1:57am
oh... i'm playing sea ice, i wish see this mod before to start...

@binchcannon It works. Thx for the explanation! Love your work :D
binchcannon  [author] 17 Jan, 2023 @ 5:51pm
@悬浊液清液浊悬 thanks for the translation! You should get 2 igloo bricks from thick snow over ice, and only 1 from thick snow over other terrain. This seems to be working for me. Are you using any other mods that might be interfering with the default terrain defs? I'll look into this some more in case I've overlook an edge case.

@Messor feel free to make your own translation mod if you would like, otherwise I may take you up on the offer later after I'm done adding all the features I have planned.

Thank you both for your interest in bringing this mod to other languages - I'm honored you'd feel it's worthwhile. :-)
壶转 17 Jan, 2023 @ 3:24pm
Hallo binchcannon, I just translated your work into Chinese. But there is a question, "Yields bonus resources over ice" -- I tested it many times but there is not an actual bonus.
Messor 16 Jan, 2023 @ 11:02pm
Hello binchcannon! If I translate the modification into Russian, will you add it?
Blutdrachen 15 Jan, 2023 @ 1:51pm
Yes, more ice sheet thematic stuff. I look forward to seeing how this develops,
binchcannon  [author] 14 Jan, 2023 @ 6:03pm
@AnAfterImage thanks for letting me know, and sorry if this caused you any inconvenience.

I did some testing and managed to uncover a load error that might have caused the behavior you're describing if your saved game had a pawn that was in the middle of a "make igloo bricks" job. I've pushed a fix - you'll have to let me know if it addresses your issue. Thank you again for reporting this!
AnAfterImage 14 Jan, 2023 @ 1:27pm
Hey, I think the update broke saving? Perhaps in conjunction with another mod?

I got an error when loading, and saving continually broke until I removed your mod.
binchcannon  [author] 13 Jan, 2023 @ 9:35am
Just pushed a performance update to make the snow depth overlay much smoother, especially during heavy snow. Almost done polishing these core igloo brick mechanics - planning to move on to a new feature soon.

Apologies to anyone whose game crashed when starting a new game - I had been using a save file to test this and didn't realize there was an initialization bug. Should be fixed now.
