@LA MUERTE
It's part of the OS, not the game. If you're talking about Vulkan then on Windows one puts the d3d9.dll at the same Directory as the game .exe so Windows uses that rather than traversing to System32 or whatevs
sperm@zoid 15 Oct, 2024 @ 3:23am
Sort of related but in the game files directory, where is the Direct3D files? Since I'm in linux and I can replace the d3d11 files for DXVK/VKD3D
Alexandr 9 Sep, 2024 @ 10:22am
edit: Oops, it was just Special K itself that's being a problem. DXVK will work for XCOM2, though, and I'm using that instead. Not to my fullest desire, but it's workable a solution.
Alexandr 8 Sep, 2024 @ 12:50am
To report my own personal experience: Seems great, but also conflicts with Special K. Any time a major scene change occurs, the window's swapchain freezes up. From a mission to the dropship going back to Avenger, or from a mission to the main menu if exiting out to the menu, for instance.

Nuking your XComEngine.ini also means your entire run needs to be restarted because when you try to reload a save the game will not remember any of your saved mods, so be careful of that.
That's not true.
PatientLandBeaver 29 Aug, 2024 @ 10:30pm
I've been using the "AllowD3D11=True" flag for a while now and on my system it gives much smoother gameplay with improved fps (7800X3D w/4090). I'm surprised it's not mentioned in any of the Xcom graphics tweaks threads listed on the net. Maybe the option used to be buggy at launch?
Sha 3 Aug, 2024 @ 9:36pm
Thank you, the setting AllowD3Dll=True in XComEngine.ini worked perfectly. From my experience on other games using DirectX, I also added -force-d3d11 in the Steam Launch Options parameter.

Combined this with the tbbmalloc.dll from Memory Allocation Dll, no more stuttering or lagging. The graphics FPS is perfectly buttery smooth on Strategy, Tactical and in-game movies! 👍

Glad I waited on the full campaign until the QoL issues have sorted out!

Cheers! 👍

Brilliant. Brilliant! Enabling this made my game look amazing. My GeForce 3080 absolutely loves it. Soldier hair looks better. Lighting is improved. Incredible mod. Thanks, @Iridar.

!remindme after further testing

big if true, but rather not run into annoying graphical issues
Ellol 508 17 Jan, 2024 @ 12:46pm
To answer some questions 1:Would this work on Mac or Linux: no there's an 'Allow OpenGL' option by default it's set to false, 2:Is it true the game runs by default dx9 : yes probably cause
Firaxis wanted the game to run on many computers as possible, 3: Would this boost performance
:depends on ur hardware for me it's like a 5% performance boost.. But thank-you Iridar

@LeyShade instructions to fix the settings reset worked like a charm here.
J2416nv 14 Dec, 2023 @ 1:51pm
i looked it up but im not sure does this work for mac?
LeyShade 2 Dec, 2023 @ 10:00am
For those having issues with graphics resetting:

Wipe your config folder in My Documents. Load the game using the AML launcher.

Set and save your graphics, audio and other base settings now. Close the game.

Reload and then set your further options for MCM or your preferred mod pack now. Close the game and restart if using mods that require it.

Your base settings will now be saved, regardless of what other settings or mods you add/remove/change in future.
ForgottenNyx 20 Nov, 2023 @ 7:44am
You can make the settings ini read only to avoid it being reset to minimum. simple google on how to do so.
diringed 19 Nov, 2023 @ 5:13am
I can confirm that, with this mod installed, the graphics setting reset to minimum each time the game is launched.
XpanD 17 Nov, 2023 @ 12:43am
I've seen/had similar issues without in the past, for what it's worth. Right now it's just my AA setting that keeps reverting, and I don't have the mod active. (yet?)
Malek Deneith 16 Nov, 2023 @ 9:49am
So I just noticed that my graphics tab settings (and *only* graphics tab settings) reset back to minimum each time I reopen the game.
And on a hunch I tried turning off this mod and suddenly the settings save properly again. Might be worth checking if that's not happening for others too - perhaps the performance increase some people experience is not DX11 but their graphics settings dropping. Hopefully not, but...
chaosshade2638 14 Nov, 2023 @ 7:27am
WOW! Massive slowdown fix! Thank you!
4NUBIS 1 Nov, 2023 @ 11:54am
Wow graphics a lot better than before
Tommy 31 Oct, 2023 @ 1:41am
very useful!
Nightcall 29 Oct, 2023 @ 11:47pm
@marshmallow justice you can see it via Riva Tuner
Iridar  [author] 29 Oct, 2023 @ 7:47pm
No, it's not the same, no idea where it could be coming from.
Kinsect 29 Oct, 2023 @ 7:17pm
so I uninstalled the mod and I'm trying to look for the XComEngine.ini file but I've only found XComEngine.ini.new
Is that the same thing or not? should I delete that one?
Iridar  [author] 27 Oct, 2023 @ 10:19pm
@marshmallow justice
It should be using DirectX 11, since that's the minimum requirement for the game, but nobody knows for sure.
marshmallow justice 27 Oct, 2023 @ 10:17pm
so does this game run on dx9 or something otherwise?
The Greater Good 27 Oct, 2023 @ 6:41pm
This reminds me that XCOM2 has been a game for seven years.
RakkoHug~<3 27 Oct, 2023 @ 5:01pm
But in-game AA still does not seem to work properly with the mod however. Perhaps interesting thing to try might be forcing AA from the graphics card control panel and see if there are any visual quality degradation and performance enhancements.
RakkoHug~<3 27 Oct, 2023 @ 4:59pm
Oh, after testing it without the mod, it seems that quite a lot of graphical glitches comes from the in-game AA setting itself not the mod. Perhaps this is why the game does not use 8xMSAA by default.
RakkoHug~<3 27 Oct, 2023 @ 4:26pm
Armor pieces with physics seems to move at accelerated pace in the barracks.
RakkoHug~<3 27 Oct, 2023 @ 4:21pm
There also seems to be texture shimmering and lighting issues.
RakkoHug~<3 27 Oct, 2023 @ 4:19pm
It seems that both in-game FXAA and 8xMSAA does not work properly with the mod. If this is indeed the case, then it may be one of the contributing factor for performance boost. This naturally comes at the expense of visual quality.
Iridar  [author] 27 Oct, 2023 @ 8:46am
@RakkoHug~<3
That's possible. At least that's how the game works with framerate smoothing. Once it's enabled, the only way to disable it is to wipe the XComEngine.ini from the game's config folder in Documents.
RakkoHug~<3 27 Oct, 2023 @ 8:20am
Oh how peculiar, Does simply disabling or removing the mod not turn off the mod's effect?
RakkoHug~<3 27 Oct, 2023 @ 7:01am
FPS improvement seems to be there but certain textures on armor looks different and FXAA does not seem to be functioning properly.
RakkoHug~<3 27 Oct, 2023 @ 6:25am
Aeronautic's Title Screen Mods have strangely high FPS with this mod.
Zelfana 27 Oct, 2023 @ 3:08am
FWIW I do not see any difference with the setting enabled using GTX 1060 6GB. It is possible this will only matter for newer cards but it does not seem to be detrimental even if it doesn't end up helping you.
Papistman 27 Oct, 2023 @ 2:56am
What exactly is everyone witnessing with this mod turned on?
Cyber Von Cyberus 26 Oct, 2023 @ 9:05pm
huh, lets see how this turns out....
Max 26 Oct, 2023 @ 6:32pm
"masterpiece mod" it's literally a one-line config edit that probably took less than five minutes to make lol
jat11241976 26 Oct, 2023 @ 1:55pm
Another masterpiece mod, thank you for this!
JMich 26 Oct, 2023 @ 11:33am
@p6kocka
the url included the closing parenthesis ) in it, remove it and the link works
Deacon Ivory 26 Oct, 2023 @ 11:14am
I may have found another setting that can be enabled: `bEnableVSMShadows= ` (switch False to True)
(see here https://docs.unrealengine.com/5.0/en-US/virtual-shadow-maps-in-unreal-engine/)
Kevin 26 Oct, 2023 @ 7:48am
Oh hey, thats me.

Thank you for making this, it was really a mindless chore to do this manually every time I clean my config files for new mods.
MrCloista 26 Oct, 2023 @ 7:46am
From my own testing (made a lo Al version I was going to upload to the workshop, but you beat me to it) and testing from others on the MEME discord, the worst we have seen is no difference, but others including myself have seen a definite performance improvement, mine improved by about 20%
