So I had to resort using a vanilla game function to instead detect if I'm holding and pressing the button (after all, TFA also does too so I guess it's the most robust way of doing it). It's a solution that works flawlessly for me (and apparently for a lotta people, seeing how this little useless gimmick got decently popular within 24 hours of release).
Anyone who doesn't like my approach are more than welcome to edit my code and improve it further, it's not like I stop people from improving my scripted addons further, in fact I encourage it. In a heavily modded game, you're bound to run into conflicts between mods sooner or later.
