Just thought you should know (and anyone else who happens to be using this combination of mods) there is some incompatibility between this and a few of Rubber Duckie's Courtyard Plus curio replacers. Their visual changes don't show, moving them up in the load order fixed this except for one, the Sanguine Sculpture. That one edits the cc_curio_props.csv file.

W, definitely the best one ive seen. :firewalk:

@amaraSN It wouldn't be too time for me to desaturate them to match vanilla in Photoshop. I'd certainly do it to my own local install. If I do, I can send you those files.

@NelVlesis Thanks for the feedback. So, the reason why I created these backgrounds was because the vanilla game environments started to feel stale and look the same to me after several playthroughs. My goal was to change the environment to make consequent playthroughs feel more fresh.

Originally, my plan was to make a separate version of this mod where the backgrounds matched the vanilla. However, due to my inexperience of modding, I made some mistakes that would require me to re-do the backgrounds from scratch to make them look vanilla (I didn't properly use layers or filters; I just edited images). So, I kinda put that in the back-burner.

I agree that some backgrounds do look like a fairytale, especially the Weald mushrooms. A compromise I can make is create an addon that cuts back on the bloom, or even changes the style to something more gloomy and dark. Right now I'm on a modding break, but I definitely would consider doing it when I'm back.

You did great work with the detailed backgrounds and the sheer variety of them. However, if I may offer some constructive criticism: you added so much glow in the dark and colorful fluorescent elements that the game went from a dark horror to a fairy land. In a sense, this makes the environments feel more like playing Trine than the original game. The mood has changed.
I'd suggest a version with colors matching vanilla backgrounds.

I used this for a 60 day stygian run and WOW...
This is one of those mods you never take off after trying it!
Theres so many little details in every room that i just stay there to look at every little nook and cranny, and the details for the Heart of Darkness fight add so much flair to the end of the questline. You could have made just a bunch of backgrounds and left it there but instead you improved little things like the cosmic hallway before the heart moving when you walk...
Only nitpick is that the extra weald and cove backgrounds are in a different style but eh i love those so much too so who cares.

11/10 would throw stuff together in photoshop again.

Incredible job! Makes all the dungeons look so much better, great first experience^^
GoldenDove20 7 May @ 8:52am
@AmaraSN I was testing it a bit and I believe my issues were because the Crimson Court DLC wasn't installed when installing this pack. I am using the 64-bit version and yeah, my framerate was tanking pretty bad but it seemed fine once I added the Crimson Court
AmaraSN  [author] 7 May @ 3:31am
@GoldenDove20 What ID error? Also, this mod makes no changes to the town. Longer load times are expected, but not frame drops. Are you using the 64-bit version of the game?
GoldenDove20 6 May @ 8:20pm
Not a good first experience, the moment I installed this I got an ID error and noticed my framerate started massively chugging in town
Baka Racker 6 May @ 12:03pm
This whole series of mods are just gorgeous.

intriguing. thank you very very very very very much. and thanks again for bringing upon the darkest dungeon graphical renaissance
AmaraSN  [author] 7 Apr @ 10:48am
@crazy For more info on how it works, you can go into the game files, under the dungeon subfolder, make your way to the Darkest Dungeon area and you'll find dungeon_animations.darkest files, which are what allows for tweaking the corridor animations. Sadly, what we can do with these animations is extremely limited. The game won't even allow to animate only portions of a foreground (top or bottom).
protein packer 7 Apr @ 6:17am
interesting. thanks for the info wasnt trying to impose or ask anything, was genuinely curious about the """"science"""" behind it
AmaraSN  [author] 6 Apr @ 11:27pm
@crazy I have no control over that. This also happens with all the other foregrounds, including the Darkest Dungeon's unique effects. The backgrounds still remain animated during battles, which means its technically possible for the foreground to do the same. However, if I had to guess, it's hard coded into the game.
protein packer 6 Apr @ 11:23pm
great mod, just curious about completely random thing. how possible is it to make the smokey effects, like from the weald, work while in battles? just think its an interesting effect and if its some type of darkest dungeon tech limitation that doesnt allow it
Reynauld 1 Apr @ 8:36am
everyone wants the "new characters" mods and stuff, but this right there, this is the most beautiful mod i have ever seen for Darkest Dungeon, just by seeing the images and everything i can see the love put behind this, this is truly amazing, props to you man, YOU are amazing.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 6:01am
@AmaraSN think I figured it out - for anyone who might be having trouble with Steamdeck for some reason it doesn't like being on the ssd. Moved it to the SD card and it works just fine. Bizarre.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:51am
Will do - preciate it!
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:47am
Alrighty. If you can't figure out the issue, try asking in the DD1 mod help section in the official DD discord. There's a lot of knowledgeable people there.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:45am
Thanks for the fix and the help! I'll poke around a bit more and see if I can figure it out.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:41am
It's brand new which is why I found it weird
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:39am
@skypanda64 Did your previous save have significant progress? The issue might be the save itself. If you want to keep that old save, the official DD discord might help with that. I have heard of save cleaners, but I've never used it myself.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:38am
Will try again with just this one to confirm
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:34am
I just tried the whole thing again and it seems like the first time I start a new save with mods after fresh installing everything including game and workshop subs (post latest fix from you) now gives the friar stone and hive quest errors. But then if I delete that save and start a new one the errors don't show up at all
ekki11 27 Mar @ 2:34am
@AmaraSN After your latest mod update, the error is gone for me. Thank you!
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:34am
Honestly no idea. It might be that some things are baked into saved files and stay there even when mods get removed, like journals. That goes beyond my knowledge of the game though.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:31am
Ok weirdly without unsubbing or anything I deleted that save file and tried on a new one and now there's no assert errors - any idea what that's about?
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:30am
Only this mod activated that is.
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:30am
Can you try loading this mod in a new save and see if you get the error?
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:29am
The standalones are supposed to be the same thing as this mod. This mod is just a bundle of them.
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:29am
The hive quest might be from Courtyard+ or some other Crimson Court mod.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:28am
Is it also worth trying to use the standalones?
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:28am
Still getting the hive quest and friar stone errors. Lemme try disabling Incandescent Whisperer
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:21am
Also, the friar_stone curio is exclusive to The Incandescent Whisperer mod. I haven't made any changes to that.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:16am
Sure lemme try one more time now. Let u know how it goes. Thanks!
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:16am
As for updates, the game devs have been actively updating the game to make all builds the same. However, a few things have broken in the process.
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 2:14am
Can you try resubscribing again? Initially I only deleted the reliquary file. Now I have deleted all of them to be sure this is no longer an issue in the future.
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 2:11am
Thanks for the support! Just tried again and it definitely did something - still getting the assert but now 1343 is cc_hive_quest and 1326 is friar_stone_curio. Also the order is reversed if that means anything - before it was 1326 then 1343.

Just out of curiosity - was there an update like 12 or so hours ago? Cause I had it working fine yesterday evening but then it suddenly started with the assert failure after I had to reinstall everything once over a bit later.
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 1:46am
@skypanda64 @ ekki11 Made another update. Try resubscribing again. Deleted all the curio skeleton and atlas files, so the game shouldn't even check if these curios exist or not
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 1:39am
Just saw you made some changes - will try unsubbing and resubbing then report back
skypanda64 27 Mar @ 1:36am
Having the exact same issue as ekki11 - have tried a few different mod collections that all seems to work fine on PC but keep getting the 1326 error for quest curio reliquary and 1343 curio iron maiden. Just tried disabling immersive backgrounds and the error goes away. Any idea of how to workaround?
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 1:33am
Made some changes, can you unsubscribe then resubscribe so the update takes effect. Attempt to login into the game again.
ekki11 27 Mar @ 1:33am
Thank you so much for your effort. I'll play without the mod for now to avoid potential issues with my savegame, but I'll keep it in my favorites waiting for updates, because it looks amazing.
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 1:30am
Oh, I thought you weren't using Linux. This a common issue with Linux where some curios are structured different in Linux builds. Let me do something real quick.
ekki11 27 Mar @ 1:28am
Same error after verify file integrity. And I'm getting the error on both the standalone and coming_in_hot versions. Also, since I'm playing on Linux, I tried running it with both the native version and Proton Experimental. And I'm seeing the error in all cases.
AmaraSN  [author] 27 Mar @ 1:17am
One last thing. Can you verify your files integrity? Also, you said that the standalone versions don't have that error right?
