if I had to make a guess on why it was removed is that the headcrabs from half-life 2 are modified by the combine which is why they have a different appearance in hl2 since in hl1 they had eyes and little tentacles at the bottom of their mouths but since the combine got a hold of them, that would mean that the gonarch pod would produce common hl1 headcrabs rather than hl2 modified headcrabs as well as poison and fast headcrabs, only a guess though
