Geothermal Fracking

A work around I've been using for fracking in mountains is using Map Edit Tools to remove the overhead mountain during the fracking and geothermal generator construction. Then replacing the overhead mountain again using Map Edit Tools. Kinda breaks immersion and is cheating but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1.6 pls i love this mid
teknowene 11 Jul @ 11:03pm
WOW this is so nice to have! Especially with the advanced energy mod
hard erect balls :3 11 Jul @ 6:53pm
1.6? PLSS <3 APPRECIATE UUU
Smolbep 21 Jun @ 10:58am
Every time I try to build one in my base dug out from a start in the hollow of a mountain, it decides it counts as indoors halfway through constructing it. Any chance the indoor requirement could be made into a toggle for edge cases like this?
Dr-Desensitized 28 May @ 1:02pm
This but helixien gas nodes would be amazing
Can you made a mod that allows you to remove pre-existing geothermal vents?
joh7196 20 Apr @ 9:40am
Hi amazing mod. can you add setting to allow the fracking to be done in mountains? It sucks this mod wont let me.
Help 12 Apr @ 7:33pm
Hi!
Any plans for a sibling mod that does the same thing, but for Helixien gas nodes? It's okay if you don't want to!
I love this mod to pieces as it is right now and thank you for making it!
thesoupiest 21 Mar @ 6:58am
Dubs Bad Hygiene patch that makes this take an absurd amount of water (maybe draining the lake/river that supplies it) would rule
Hoki 15 Mar @ 4:12am
Usernames are hard did an intresting mention but instead of adding another item to build it why not simply make use of the exising reinforced barrel? prefereably using it up when digging a vent.

so with that post in mind:

deepdrilling research -> [new station] Fracking Drill (200 Steel, 8 components, 1-3 reinforced Barrel) -> 2500 work. drill gets removed upon completion
Drestalos 14 Mar @ 12:05pm
Yeah I'm with Arthur GC with that one, good mod, should be more "in"accessible lol good stuff though big guy :beeped:
YolographicSight® 14 Mar @ 11:03am
this mod is very Fracking cool
Arthur GC 14 Mar @ 3:02am
My suggestion is to create a new item costing double the price of a deep drill + 1 advanced component.

Requires research: Fracking (which has a dependency of Deep drilling).

Costs:
200 Steel
4 Components
1 Advanced Component

Has a chance of spawning an infestation, and the chance can be configured in the mod settings.

You could also add a bill/item to close/remove the steam vents.

Overall, this mod seems similar to ED-Laser-Drill (Continued) , so maybe adding these options will make this one differ a little bit.
Farbott 13 Mar @ 9:44pm
I mean Caz, if you use hidden conduits and wall around your geothermals (no roof) pretty much everything ignores them entirely and its free power
Jeanmouloude 13 Mar @ 3:07pm
does it have an impact on the planet ? or nature ? that would be really intresting and fun
Caz 13 Mar @ 12:27am
This is exactly what I've been wanting for geothermal for years. Now I'll actually use geothermal instead of entirely ignoring it!!
Usernames Are Hard 13 Mar @ 12:00am
Still maintain that either locking it behind deep drilling or a specific research dedicated to fracking itself being locked behind deep drilling is the best course of action.
Usernames Are Hard 12 Mar @ 11:59pm
@SilkCircuit Maybe a fracking drill can cost a specific, unique rare item similar to reinforced barrels? Could be a hydraulic pressurizer or something of that sort. Should serve well to bottleneck new vents. Infestations sound good as a downside, although maybe it can cause a radius of pollution to generate as well. As a suggestion for the cost:

320 steel
10 components
1 hydraulic pressurizer/1-2 advanced components

Not sure how long a fracking drill should operate to actually make a vent before self-destructing. 5 days to a quadrum sounds good, although a quadrum is certainly pushing it.
SilkCircuit  [author] 12 Mar @ 11:24pm
@here - Please comment with what this should cost for balance. There are recommendations for it costing antigrain warhead, locked behind deep drilling, infestations, or nothing more at all i.e. there is a lot of opinion and I want to capture the sentiment of the community before making any changes. Thanks fam
Geisterhaft 11 Mar @ 10:34pm
If I can make a suggestion for balance, maybe cause a random geyser (and all other buildings built on top of it) to collapse whenever you create a new one. This would imply that you're rerouting existing geothermal networks underground and the loss of pressure causes the damage.

And a setting to go with whichever people want to play with.
Capefear56 11 Mar @ 9:04pm
Drill baby drill!
Usernames Are Hard 11 Mar @ 8:19pm
Honestly I feel like this mod would be a lot more balanced if it was locked behind something like deep drilling and required a specific fracking building that got consumed on creating the vent under it. Maybe costing some steel and like one or two advanced components.
Shelly LOVER! 11 Mar @ 10:40am
@Augusthetitan no it isn't, Like yeah it is its also dependent on traits too that give a buff to digging speed
AugustTheTitan 11 Mar @ 9:59am
Is digging speed dependent on mining skill?
Sera 11 Mar @ 5:45am
@Нубас
considering i have yet to ever see one in my 5000+ hours without spawning it i have to disagree
Bepiss 11 Mar @ 5:42am
Agree to include steel costs, as in "setting pipes and to reinforce the hole's structure". Also ability to "cover" existing gysers would be cool.
Нубас 11 Mar @ 4:16am
@SilkCircuit
An antigrain warhead seems like a fine solution. It's uncraftable so you can't just casually cover your whole map in geysers and seems like something that would have the explosive power to create a geothermal vent
Sera 11 Mar @ 2:39am
if i had to give an idea of balance i would say 50-100 steel. that ways it's like your drilling in to set the pipes to pop the steam.
Hoki 11 Mar @ 12:47am
havent used the mod yet (but read through the comments)

for balance i would thing of it like: make it its own research and locate it behind deep drilling. there are a lot of mods that make of steamvents (bad hygiene, hot springs just to name examples). Add its own type of machinery to do it (this would be the material investment - just basic ressources).

for QoL i'm on csc001s side to make the natural vents deconstructable as well. in theory that should only take a minor patch to do (but I could be wrong). primarily aesthetical but sometimes the vents can also be off by just a few tiles which can annoyingly mess with dense base designs.
Aranador 10 Mar @ 8:27pm
If you really want to destroy a steam geyser, use Dev Mode. Usually the Men In Black do not come for you if you do this.
csc001 10 Mar @ 7:32pm
Purely aesthetics, some vanilla steam geysers will make area ugly ,anytime i will destory some vanilla steam geysers.so i hope a mod can destory vanilla steam geysers donot need dev.

thank your mod again:steamthumbsup:
SilkCircuit  [author] 10 Mar @ 7:23pm
Thanks very much, @csc001, but I don't have any desire to make vanilla steam geysers removable (at least not with this mod specifically). Its purpose is to extend power from the vanilla base game, not to remove any.

Out of curiosity, what would be your intention for this? Purely aesthetics or creating more functional space?
csc001 10 Mar @ 7:18pm
First of all, thanks to the author for the mod, and secondly, does the author have any desire to manipulate the original vanilla geyser in order to make it removable for burial?
SilkCircuit  [author] 10 Mar @ 7:04pm
@RedFace07 You just need to select the geyser and click 'deconstruct,' which only appears on these specific steam geysers obtained through geothermal fracking.

@Sera @Нубас @twitch. tv/Mattikush @polskirzomek @ObscureParticle @Halcyon – I was working through different scenarios for balancing, considering either additional cost requirements and/or potential infestations that scale based on various factors. Given the mixed feedback on balance, what do you all see as a fair middle ground? For example, I could make it cost an antigrain warhead, but that seems a bit extreme.

@LumberingTroll Looking into gas vents.

@Dust Lmao, yes, exactly. Nailed it, brother.
Sera 10 Mar @ 6:12pm
nice! Both the vents and deep chem are a pain to work with to the point i just don't bother or dev mode move the deep chem spot.

as for balance i thing it's perfect. Takes a long time to make locked behind the right research and you have to deal with every other negative of a steam vent being inside (excessive heat) or outside (drop raid mortar target)
Dust 10 Mar @ 3:14pm
@StockSounds No, there's also layers of flesh, ores, and insects. Presumably the hot air is below all of that :P
Нубас 10 Mar @ 9:42am
honestly if this had a chance of summoning infestations or needed some sort of explosive to construct it would be balanced enough
RedFace07 10 Mar @ 6:29am
hey it said it can be buried if needed how can i do that and is it only the one that i made or the natural spawned one too i can sorry if bad english
twitch.tv/Mattikush 10 Mar @ 12:05am
Def needs a nerf like option to attract creatures from underground otherwise no challenge
polskirzomek 9 Mar @ 6:51pm
would be nice a option to make it so can couse invastion due like vibration or somfing a lot of mods do that
ObscureParticle 9 Mar @ 2:42pm
Like the Halcyon idea, if at all possible.
TancujucáKlobasa123 9 Mar @ 9:59am
@ShadowEater read the description
ShadowEater25 9 Mar @ 12:01am
How to remove vents? there isn't a deconstruct button or a tool to do it so i'm just wondering how
Halcyon 8 Mar @ 4:06pm
I very much like the sound of this mod, but I'd argue it should cost an antigrain warhead to build, just to make it a tiny bit less OP
justydusty 8 Mar @ 10:56am
@stocksounds yeah
StockSounds 8 Mar @ 9:34am
So is the world just a bunch of solid ground surrounding a massive pocket of hot air?
LumberingTroll 8 Mar @ 5:06am
Nice, can we get one for the gas vents as well?
MetaVandetta23 8 Mar @ 1:17am
I am curious does this work on ice? Specifcially because I do want to do it on sea ice and I was wondering if it would work there.
SilkCircuit  [author] 7 Mar @ 11:08pm
Love you guys @Richard Watterson @v0kk3r. And will look into incorporating the Vanilla helixien gas expanded mod, no promises, but will take a look tomorrow.
