actually scratch that. I've just looked at some retexture addons, and there are like... two types of it.

first type is the one that has reskin materials, as you have said.
and the second is the one that replaces textures entirely. because the addon doesn't have reskin materials.

so the second one works only if it's installed first.
and the first one works right away.
I get it now. nevermind me.

same. is o-k, do it whenever you want or don't do it if you don't want
as for $cdmaterials and .vmt file for reskins, dang that's cool. I've haven't seen it being used much though. thanks for explaining a theory

another note, I've never seen retextures work, when you install the original mod first, and then the retexture.
maybe there's some dollarsign $ command for a .vmt file, that lets the retexture override the original mod's textures, without the need for a reskin path? probably not, cause then it would've been known by now.

hypothetically, for an addon that doesn't have the reskin thingy; when I install the original mod first, and then the retexture: it prioritizes the original mod's textures, and the retexture doesn't work.

only when the retexture is installed before the original addon, it actually works. overriding the original's textures. cause then in addonlist.txt, the retexture addon is above the original addon, taking priority. but maybe I'm just stoopid, idk.

i've slowed down on modding and stuff so idk when i'll get around to adding proper reskin support for my nmrih stuff, if ever.

i understand.
in theory, if you subscribe to the og mod and then the tex, it *usually* works. there's also editing the addonlist like you mentioned, which is more effective, but it may be a hassle for some.

my understanding on how it works is that the og mod would have a separate $cdmaterials path dedicated for reskins, placed at the top of the other paths, for it to have a higher priority.
then the actual reskin would have its own textures and a .vmt that is placed in the same exact directory as the reskin path.
so if you install a reskin, it ensures the og mod loads it first.

oh hai. yeah I'm a detail freak, there's not a lot of people who care about the color of the frickin bandages out there.

I hope you don't mind me using your addon in it's entirety... I don't take credit for anything. I'd be content with uploading just the textures if it was working right away.

I did it as so, for the sake of it being convenient. as you'd get it working right off the bat, instead of people having to meddle with prioritization n shit themselves. having to redownload the original if you already had subscribred would be annoying. editing addonlist.txt probably works, but I think some won't bother.

I don't think adding your addon as a required item would work, as it would still download the original first, therefore taking priority, right? so eh..
if I may ask on another topic, how does proper reskin support work? it'd be great for retextures to work without any worry of addon priorities.

i only didn't add reskin support because i didn't think people would bother

i don't think you have to include the entire mod, only the tex. you'd just have to make sure that the mod priority is set correctly.

but in retrospect i should probably just add proper reskin support in the first place..
