Downgrade to the version of the game this was made in, blame the developer aircraft are completely fucking broken now.
(Or just try some of the low-altitiude interceptors)

Not really, at higher altitudes, aircraft engines do not have as much oxygen available to combust fuel with, so engine effeciency at higher altitudes diminish.
