Templars were an order of knighthood, along with Hospitallars and others. In the case of the Templars, they tended to do things their own way, and became tremendously rich and powerful doing so; enough to attract the envy of kings and Popes. With the loss of Jerusalem, their influence declined, and that eventually led to their destruction. In 1307, King Phillip of France, who was deeply indebted to them, took advantage of their secret initiation rites to condem them, while at the same time, threatening Pop Clement with military action. In France they were disbanded and many were burned at the stake. In 1312, bowing to the pressure, Pope Clement officially disbanded the order.
