Actually, there is a difference in the number of hits it takes to kill even normal monsters. With something as weak as a spider, yes, it takes three hits to kill one with either the spear or gladius, but a hound requires five hits with the spear vs four hits with the gladius.
Granted, it's not a huge difference, and you're right. The science machine is so easy to build that it really doesn't make much of a difference. By the time the gladius is going to be making any of a difference (ie. the character is going up against stronger monsters) you should most likely have a science machine built already.
I would, however, like to see the science machine become a requirement for making a gladius
I agree, but it doesn't really matter (it would be more polished though). Basically, the Science Machine is very easy to build and the sword damage is so close to the Spear in that you would still have to hit something like a Spider 3 times to kill for example.

It's now more balanced, has a great number of uses, but still not op. And the cost is now fair.
