Well this mod definitly does not work anymore. Which is a shame because I had plans for floating railgun turrets.
Tripledz 20 May, 2022 @ 6:02am
Does this work with EWE?
jonn19  [author] 31 Jan, 2022 @ 6:47pm
HI Skidd, I haven't looked at this for over a year so unsure if it's even working with all the game updates. That said... it never did work on floating objects, only grids :)
Sharty McFly 9 Jan, 2022 @ 3:31pm
Can the beam grab items like ore, components, character tools and weapons, etc.?
TheWonderer 29 Oct, 2020 @ 6:33am
im guees this does not work anymore tired to line up the beam and it does nothing
Gufo10 20 Oct, 2020 @ 2:03pm
i would like to have the holding distance a little longer, it gets too close for comfort or just smashes the ship into my shields
Monolith 4 Aug, 2020 @ 6:16am
does this still work or is it broken like the other tractor beam mod atm?
magamace 28 Oct, 2018 @ 8:42am
Funny thing, when these are attached to a ship the nanite mod can't disassemble it.
Kieks 26 Jul, 2018 @ 3:35pm
yeah this is just not as good as a certain other mod.

i like how it just stops the grid at a certain range

the beam continues through a grid and makes it ugly.

it has a bunch of various crashes.

if these issues were fixed it would be a good noob friendly tractor beam. but right theres a better and more realitic one available

My game refuses to load while this mod is installed, crashing every time. It appears to be a conflict with the Laser Welders mod, all my laser welders are reporting a crash but only when this mod is installed, they work fine without it.
ViviVillain 25 May, 2018 @ 12:13pm
It still works but sometimes crashes the game, even when its not in use
jonn19  [author] 3 Mar, 2018 @ 10:42pm
Not sure Silver, will check it out sometime. I did have issues with the 1.181 update but I suspect the newer Big Physics Update may have helped. I would guess that it'll need a rewrite though.
TheSilverInfinity 23 Feb, 2018 @ 4:46pm
still working?
Maddus_ 10 Nov, 2017 @ 5:53pm
Perfect for anyone wanting to recreate Spaceballs in SE
PsyberWolf 31 Oct, 2017 @ 6:40pm
Hello Jonn19, it looks like every time I click on Detect friendly targets, my game crashes. I've even tried shutting the block off, switching it, then turning it on resulting in a crash. Please help. I love your mod!
Chimeric§Abyss 14 Jul, 2017 @ 5:29pm
@waldo theoreticly it should, but thus will use lots of power. also it depends on how big your ship is and how big the other ship is. like he said, if u have a small ship and he has a large ship, using multiple tractor beams would eat up your energy, and possibly either pull it in faster or slower. most likely it would pull in faster, so test it yourself.
Waldo 5 Jun, 2017 @ 4:29am
if you have multiple beams does that increase the pull force?
hellhound 10 May, 2017 @ 3:02am
thanks
jonn19  [author] 10 May, 2017 @ 2:49am
1km, daniel.
hellhound 10 May, 2017 @ 2:04am
what's the max range of this thing?
BiskFather 7 May, 2017 @ 4:36am
we need a tractor beam to be able to pick people up aswell :)
Cody 29 Apr, 2017 @ 11:48pm
'Bout damn time a tractor beam was put in SE. Like for real.

Thanks for breaking the ice there, I suppose. I'll be sure to try this out at some point. :)
SimplyySerenity 27 Apr, 2017 @ 6:27am
Thanks for the Reply Jonn19. awesome work, and please, it still has the realism in it, but functionality should be top priority in a mod like this. OBVIOUSLY. but like i said great work, and don't work yourself too hard! take your time. quality over quantity. especially when other things take up your time :P keep up the good work sir!
Kiminaze 27 Apr, 2017 @ 3:36am
Hey Jonn19, I really like the concept you came up with regarding balancing this piece of technology.
But I have an idea for a small ship design! Something like a cargo scoop, so you can reel in cargo containers or wreckage or whatever (just really small pieces).
open up your cargo bay door, activate the beam and instead of a whole ship, just a few lose blocks :D

(Just as an idea for a small ship version)

Hi all, thanks for all the comments. I have a rush of work at the moment but Hunter I will have a look at the reported bug when I can - appreciate the report.
Edmund just type trac into the search bar, should pop up.
Lord Wraith thanks heaps for taking the time, I'm always super surprised that someone would review one of my mods! Hopefully you will play with it a little more and see it in use.
KnMndl the third law code did need to be added; it's a very simple calc though (just multiplied the main "tractoring" force by -0.2 and applied it to the block's own grid.) I really should have made both equal, of course, but gave up a little realism for usability.
jonn19  [author] 26 Apr, 2017 @ 2:23pm
Good idea with the turret script, Game Sage, should work perfectly with that. I thought that rotating rotor camera array could also raycast for targets, or you could pull a target position from Cheetah's mod... just left a little of the "turret" concept implementation to players :)

Sorry about the large-block-only design, it's a pretty powerful tool and I think needs to be limited to grids with appropriately large power outputs. My next mod will bring something for the small ship lovers (again SW-inspired and derived from my EMP block...) It's nearly ready for release. Stupid work!
SimplyySerenity 26 Apr, 2017 @ 8:27am
did you code the physics law in or just kinda... naturally happened? just curious
Edmund the Weeb 25 Apr, 2017 @ 2:13pm
I can't seem to find it in the menu... halp?
Hunter 25 Apr, 2017 @ 12:53pm
@jonn19
> Bug report: Crashes the game if the targeted ship has a projection active (for example, the ZPM Freighter from the Stargate mod).
>> Love the mod! Absolutely insane! Thank you!!
Lord Wraith SOL3 25 Apr, 2017 @ 10:35am
have done a review of your design - hope you like it - https://youtu.be/dg8n7Vk7l4g

if used with Rdav's turret AI thing that allows one to turn any static weapon into a turret, one could make tractor turrets. Though the downside there is that such turrets require a standard weapon turret to be automatically aimed. That said, if the guide turret was out of ammo and the target still had blocks that a weapon would open fire on, the guide turret trying to fire would keep the tractor beam online. Once you no longer needed the tractor beam, simply turn off the guide turret.
Laffyistired 24 Apr, 2017 @ 11:19pm
very nice well done
id~ 24 Apr, 2017 @ 8:48pm
"It's a fixed block, not a turret (now that would be OP!) " Don't tempt me to make a player operated turret for it. :p2cube:
venator2070 23 Apr, 2017 @ 4:13am
hmmmm.... is it only large fixed or small fixed? and as said i'd make it glow when activated because a steady beam is nowhere seen in a sci-fi. it is always either invisible or some kind of vortex.
jonn19  [author] 23 Apr, 2017 @ 3:12am
Hey guys. I doubt it will work as a drive but let me know how your experiments go :) It could cause havoc (pun intended) but unlikely.
Venator, I made the beam fixed-only as a balancing decision; a turret would be OP in my opinion (especially if it had AI.) With the upcoming change to ignore friendly grids it would work on a rotor, which means you could build a turret with some programming - there are some turret control scripts out there. Similar with the invisible beam: not cool in PvP I reckon, not having something obvious to evade.
delleds 22 Apr, 2017 @ 7:37pm
Could you use this as a drive? As in placing this tractor beam block on a rotor and using it to pull your ship around?
venator2070 22 Apr, 2017 @ 6:30am
Good work but I got some questiones: is there a chance of getting an invisible beam or at least something that just glows where the origin point is. next question is if it is turreted or a fixed beam. If it is fixed pls make a turetted version since fixed is a bit inconvinient. thx in advance keep it up!
jonn19  [author] 22 Apr, 2017 @ 6:14am
Hi again. I updated this mod to include the ability to set the range at which captured grids stop (5m-100m) and also to ignore friendly grids (handy if built on pistons, to avoid seeing attached grids as separate.) Unfortunately when used on a dedicated server all the normal controls disappeared, so you couldn't turn it off, etc. I've reverted to original version until I fix the DS issues, hope I didn't make any blocks disappear from your worlds!
DeRavi 21 Apr, 2017 @ 11:04pm
Great for my Constitution! Thx!
NixFaux 21 Apr, 2017 @ 10:21pm
yeah i was thinking planetary elevator..
jonn19  [author] 21 Apr, 2017 @ 8:59pm
Hi guys. No idea Tofu, I haven't checked... but it just adds force to the grids so I can't see why atmosphere/gravity would do anything unexpected. It'd make a good elevator actually.
NixFaux 21 Apr, 2017 @ 8:30pm
just 1 question how well does it work in atmo?
Copycat80 21 Apr, 2017 @ 8:44am
great mod, I have been waiting for this for so long............
