Never noticed how big his ears were until he showed up in my game
MarsEco 22 Jul, 2023 @ 10:51pm
2 Questions and 1 Suggestion. Q1: When the Encampment if 1st completed, does it spawn one of those free units? Q2: What percentage chance is it Melee or Ranged, 50-50, or does it start with one and then alternated back and forth? S: Instead of Melee and Ranged units for free, what about Heavy Cav instead? Same as if it were a Meteor Strike 'goodie' reward and it would fit with the Civ's base-unique unit the Chariot. (To fully balance it, because they will not have maintenance or strat resource costs, (so i assume,) maybe the free units stop after you research the Tank at Combustion...)

Look forward to your reply.

Haven't seen it mentioned but do not try to use him with YnAMP. The true start location is set to a two tile island with no way to do move off it (due to not having the tech), no way to move your warrior (not having the tech) and no way to get the tech necessary because, again, you only have two tiles to work.

My only issue is that I don't think his ears are big enough

You guys are spending too much time on this topic.Technically Egyptians are African so if you really want an answer just place them into that general category and do not bother to go further in it. In the ancient world various empires had various kinds of people. In Ancient Egypt it would be hard to ague that such a pale individual could lead a precolonial African empire but hey whatever floats your boat.
Lord Of the flies 12 Jun, 2020 @ 1:49pm
hey can you update this mod and balance it for civ expanded.
Alexander the "Straight" 12 Apr, 2019 @ 11:32am
I can't seem to get him to show up in the leader select screen, and I wonder if it might have to do with this not being updated for GS. I know about placing <CompatibleVersions>2.0</CompatibleVersions> in the .modinfo file, but this doesn't seem to fix the issue for me.

@sukritact: Love the city names. Good job. :steamhappy:

My views on Egyptian skin tones can be seen on the previous page: there was a rather lengthy discussion. I've tried my best to match the modern copts: their historical language was a direct descendant of Ancient Egyptian (today it remains their liturgical language).

That said, Egypt was absurdly diverse, given the amount of trade between the Levant, Egypt and Nubia.
Trollified 1 Aug, 2017 @ 2:14pm
who is this pasty white man in the time period where neither greek nor arab has set foot in Egypt?

If you want a pasty white man, atleast pick something after 500 BC.

i have the same problem

Was there a... hiatus?

When I played him the special museum building didn't enable me to train archelogists. Was this intentional?

Please make the Iroquois Nation next! Or at least one Native American tribe in the game.

He looks like a mildly buff Prince Charles, too much "Gods of Egypt" cinema here, I'll pass on this one.

Odd, i havent heard any what so ever O_o
I should resub and try agaain
sukritact  [author] 20 Jun, 2017 @ 6:02am
@Baleur: There is music though, for all the modded civs by the major modders.
Baleur 20 Jun, 2017 @ 3:04am
So badly wanna use these custom civs you amazing modders produce (as with Civ5).
But having literally zero music and just dead silence when playing, kinda ruins the feel of exploring and experiencing a new civilization =(

Btw where's Henry VII (or VIII according to some typos)?
Paulo Ramos 16 Jun, 2017 @ 2:41pm
the egyptians are dark skined like the Bedouin with the DNA studies showing about 10% sub- saharan component in lower Egypt in the era of new kingdom Egypt. They are the lightest egpytians.Cleopatra from Civ VI has the appearance very clore to a Egyptian of her time despite her Ptolemaic origin
Paulo Ramos 16 Jun, 2017 @ 2:04pm
@Iroh-Q: the fayum portraits represent peolple from the roman occupation of Egypt, roman citizens not the locals

Are the free units too OP? I feel like Encampments are an average district, but this makes them almost as good as Commercial Hubs (especially with Carthage's Suzerain bonus).
Kaboom 15 Jun, 2017 @ 7:29pm
i like this new leader for Egypt. Good work!
Indigo 15 Jun, 2017 @ 2:00am
@sukritact: I agree, I think the black argument is very difficult to make. I don't think trying to categorize Ancient Egypt in general as belonging to a particular modern classification is a good idea, they weren't white or black, it'd be like trying to categorize Indians as white or black.

I think many modern Egyptians in general look similar to Ancient Egyptians, sometimes it's clear where there was admixture with other groups. I can see the argument for more representations of darker-skinned Egyptians (alongside lighter-skinned ones), but that isn't targeted at this mod. I think this skin tone is fine as being on the lighter side of the scale. It's similar to that of the Fayoum portraits.

Looking forward to playing with this mod! Are you planning on any more Egyptian leaders? Thanks! :)
Indigo 15 Jun, 2017 @ 1:59am
@Olórin Stormcrow: It looks like a look of Greeks at the time mentioned that Lower Egyptians looked similar to Northern Indians and some groups of Southern Europeans, with the skin tone darkening as you moved south. I think the most likely conclusion is that there was a large range of skin tones. I think there was a study that indicated that modern Egyptians still remain the closest relatives to the ancient Egyptians (DNA wise).

I took a look at some articles referring to the study you mentioned, it's interesting! I wonder how they compared modern Egyptians to the ancients.
sukritact  [author] 14 Jun, 2017 @ 9:16pm
I'm not inclined to agree that the Egyptians were black in the modern sense, unfortunately. Afaik modern Egyptological consensus is not the they were sub-Saharan, that they was admixture, yes, but not black in the modern sense. Coptic is the modern descendent of Ancient Egyptian as well, so I'm predisposed to believe they are best representative of the Ancient Egyptians.
Olorin 14 Jun, 2017 @ 6:34pm
@Iroh-Q, @ferspnai : There recently was a study where the DNA of a New Kingdom era mummy was sequenced and found to be relatively close to that found in Syra-Palestine. They also found that modern Egyptians contain more Sub-Saharan DNA than their New Kingdom ancestors. With that in mind, I find the skin tone you have for Senusret perfectly fine.
Indigo 14 Jun, 2017 @ 3:17pm
@ferspnai: I think you're right, a debate wouldn't really be fruitful. I haven't really studied Arabization enough to make any claims, though in my opinion I think that the effect of Arabization is usually overstated. Good call on the Berber term, I'll use Amazigh instead.

I can understand your perspective though, in general I think having more darker skinned representations of Ancient Egyptians would be good. Though I think it's important not to go to extremes, as sometimes advocates of the Black Egyptians perspective end up depicting them to be far darker skinned than the typical Nubian/East African. Staying within the possible range without going to extremes is probably best.

I think Sukritact's depiction is definitely plausible, but I can also see where you're coming from.

@Sukritact: Great mod! I like how you replicated his unusual features :) And those are fun modifiers too!

ferspnai 14 Jun, 2017 @ 2:40pm
which statements would you like support for? i don't have Definitive Proof for the idea that they were black, as i said, it is controversial, but the time frame for arabisation is factual. i believe though that the majority of current scholars agree with you that there is a range. btw - berber is a slur for the amazigh people! and they've been arabised as well, so that complicates matters.
ferspnai 14 Jun, 2017 @ 12:58pm
anyways obviously we all know how ancient egyptians would fit into modern racial categories is controverial so i don't think either one of us is going to Win an Argument, just saying i'd prefer that he and others like hatshepsut be depicted dark
ferspnai 14 Jun, 2017 @ 12:54pm
sorry, much more than two thousand years, closer to three
ferspnai 14 Jun, 2017 @ 12:51pm
thank you for your thoughtful reply! so - senusret predates saladin by about two thousand years, and egypt did not start being arabised until about the 7th century AD. ptolemaic pharaohs would certainly have been lighter skinned for obvious reasons, but before that, egyptians looked like nubians and other sub-saharan africans, not copts or other modern arabised north africans
sukritact  [author] 14 Jun, 2017 @ 5:50am
@ferspnai: I tried to match Saladin's skin tone (which is pretty close to modern Copts and other North Africans), though I don't know if it looks that way.

If by African you mean the darker sub-saharan skin tones, there's a Nubian 25th Dynasty, but Nubia really is distinct enough that we modders probably would give them a civ of their own, covering both the Egyptianised Nubians (Kush), the Pre-Egyptianised Nubians (Kerma) and the Christianised Kingdoms of Nobatia, Makuria and Alodia.

also i realize there's already a hatshepsut mod but i'd love to see your take on her
ferspnai 14 Jun, 2017 @ 3:59am
it is disappointing that a pre-ptolemaic pharaoh is so light-skinned, i wonder if you might consider making him look more african? but i love your model work and am thankful for your prolific contributions to the workshop!
sukritact  [author] 14 Jun, 2017 @ 3:03am
@Todd: Define useless.

Civ 6's dialogue seems to lean more humorous and less regal, so to speak. I'm simply following that trend. Compare it to something like Phillip's dialogue:

"We received the heret- I mean, your trade delegation. I will be sure to instruct them in our ways."

or Pericles's

"We have sent you a delegation bearing gifts. Don’t be alarmed, there’s no large wooden horse involved."

or Barbarossa's

"As the Holy Roman Emperor, I welcome you to our land. If you wish, you can see some of its glory in the nearest city. Unless, of course, they are rebelling again."
captaintoddfish 14 Jun, 2017 @ 2:47am
Cool, but the dialogue could use a bit of work, such lines like "And a golden knife, like the one I am holding." Such lines seem useless, no offense of course.

Hello Sukritact! Congrats for your newly release, it looks great as usual.
The next thing I would like to ask may be a little bit off the topic, so I sincerely wish you do not mind of my abruptness. I feel like you can seek higher accomplishments if you could rebalance of your modding plans for both Civ 5 and Civ 6. In fact, the one I am fascinated the most is your civ 5 edifice project. So far you created platforms and couple wonders, But since then, you began to leave the project. I noticed that trend and attempted to lobby you and other elite modders to catch up your project for nearly 3 months in the forum, but it seemed that none of them, except you could regenerate the project. So I sincerely hope you may consider my sugguestion and add it to your future plan. I personally do not possess any knowledge of modding, but I am eager to contribute for real. I may do tons of testings if you need. Anyway, hopefully I could get your reply shortly. Thanks
