Attention modders! Lets create best RPG game...
At least hear my ideas before you call me crazy!

Hi everybody!
I am big hack n slash lover and I want to try to create best mod for TL2 with your help.
Like we all know hack n slash RPG is almost dead game genre - there is PoE, Grim Down, Diablo 3 which is almost dead, Titan Quest released anniversary edition so mods are not compatible with it, Diablo 2 with great Median XL mod and Torchlight 2 with best mod community.

But why?
There is already great amount of existing TL2 mods and each of them has great content and ideas.But sometimes they are not 100% compatible with each other and maybe they are not very balanced when they are used with other mods. What I was thinking is creating one big mod which will contain all fundamental things which great RPG game must have. With this it would be easier to play multiplayer because people would use same mod. Also you wouldn't need to worry about bugs, compability, loading oreders and stuff like that.

But how?
I was thought that it is good idea to take best of best or "creme de la creme" of existing mods (with permission of authors of course), balance and merge them and then start from that.
When starting point is decided then there are two options:
- everybody works on it and everybody adds features directly into it or
- people working on separate features or even mods - somebody creates classes, somebody maps, items, bosses etc. and after that everything is merged into one mod.

We can take Synergies (thx Salan) and upgrade it to even better mod for example. People can add mods what they like to it but our mod will be core for it.


What every great RPG game needs to have?
This is something that needs to be discussed first. We need to take best ideas from existing RPG games and mods and create something similar here.
For example what I have on my mind right now:
- new classes
- new balanced items, runes and runewords
- more maps, dungeons, end game content, some sort of "infinte" scaling of difficulty
- new bosses, maybe uber bosses, boss specific item drops and stuff like that
- ability to respec skill and attribute points
- ability to create new character which is already max lvl if you did story mode at least once
- PvP maybe

Good thing is that there is great amount of mods which already have some of this ideas implemented. What we would do is take those mods and make them balanced and compatible with each other and then implement everything else we want.


This seems decent, what are first steps?
First step is to find people who wants and can help to make this.
Then we would brainstorm all ideas and put them on paper.
After that we need to see what already is implemented in mods and how to reuse that (again, with permission of original authors).

Well I just want to revive RPG genre and create something that everybody can use and set up easily. If you think that this is bad idea please explain it to me and I will delete this discussion like it never happend :D

@ Legacy of Chaos: Will you never quit and will you continue this good plan for years to come?

I am very busy and in fact know very little about Guts... however I have a brain storm of ideas and can be of use to you for discussing out of the box class themes since my knowledge in the Hack Slash genre (and modding) is shallow compared to my creativity with class styles based on Human Roles in History... or super hero power themes.

3. If anyone mods TL2 then they are at high risk for loving the Hack Slash genre XD.

4. "Almost Dead Game Genre": "Grim Dawn" is proof that this is a good thing for the independant developer... but your point is valid since most "big" companies have ignored it recently. (Or is it that most gamers ignore it by funding other genres? That's some deep stuff).

Me: Good idea... but to do something beyond Synergies will take people who will have to dedicate some years of their lives to making that reality... I can't offer that but I can assist in discussions.

Part 2: A Modders Struggle

Me: Many have merged mods but I assume you mean to rebalance their numbers?

Me: That will definitely need an experienced team of modders who know how to use Guts.

Me: The only team even doing something like that currently is the TL1CP with Torchmodders and the LAO mods which have taken between 2 to 3 years to reach this point.

The only individual who is doing this seperately by themselves is Darkthan with his own mods... and he has revised his classes 3 times in 3 years...

The only one who is really doing new custom things with a mod class is Haxley with his Naruto mod... and that will be 12 months of work plus 2 years of ideas when 2017 Feburary arrives.

The only one who has attempted to add Extra Synergies Classes was Drewrobi who has been on a long vacation for several months now.

The only one who abandoned trying to merge almost all classes together was Draco1122 from Additional Classes with Add On.

Me: Did you get Salan"s Permit? Also if Salan is still updating then wouldn't that mean there would be 2 Synergies mods? Exactly what is the example there?

If anything I would recommend you start working with Darkthan since his Path of Torchlight and his attempt to recreate Diablo 2 inside TL2 has a "clean" foundation to work with... but then that's just my advice... it's your call.

Part 3: Loners Vs Teams

Me: Some of these things are easy and exist like Respec... PvP can be done but seems to be the most infamously difficult of them all with no finished mods as of yet... balance and the fact TL2 was never originally designed for PvP is the biggest obstacle.

The rest of it has been attempted or done by Salan and to a lesser extent: Darkthan.

And apparently the unreleased LAO 3.0 has a multiplayer functional NG+33 all the way to Level 999 according to that mod series author.

Me: Again I have to question why would anyone merge Synergies if it's still receiving updates... if not then it's a good idea... but then what about the other mods that belong to Darkthan or whoever?

A load order that contains all these ideas and needs has always been favored by separate modders so as to allow modders to work on their own mods when they want, how they what and with whatever ideas they want.

It's like a dream for an individual modder who may not be able to realize that dungeon or that boss at that time and not hold back the rest of the team.

Again the real issue here is the "team" that has to agree to be of one mind... one goal... one vision...

Synergies... TL1CP... Far East... these were teams of modders who had specific roles and they managed to complete their visions... however Far East team eventually fell apart when real life became important to the individals involved.

TL1CP is a collaboration of 6 people... some of which have different visions that remain separate which allows quicker progress without holding back other content if they were all the same mod.

The info I have given exposes the true challenges and real questions hidden just beneath the surface of what anyone would really need to realize this vision.

Me: If I may say kindly and frankly; this is the one thing that makes the most sense to me with all due respect...

"A plan" and back up "plan B". XD.

Find modders... real experienced modders who are not ignorant of "Guts" unlike me lol.

Brain storm ideas: yes this is my skill.

Record on paper... I assume you mean digital documents for obvious reasons of email to send to each member of the team... I've got my phone and laptop that I always use to record my own personal ideas and balance for my own twin class mod for the future. It's just useful in every way to use this method otherwise I would forget lol.

Mod ideas already done: Yes it's better if we did things that haven't been done or find ways of editing what exists or merging and rebalancing...

Part 5: My Own Limits

So am I in?

Nope lol.

Count me out.

There's no way I could balance my life commitments with my own mods... answering questions on the workshop... learning to build my own game outside TL2... spending time with family and friends...

and then becoming a "true" member of this proposed team.

We have Darkthan, Haxley, the TL1CP team and the Synergies team who all have their mod projects that they have commited to.

You would need people who are willing to become one with your collective ideas together and actually have the know how and time without too many outside commitments to do it.

Yes I am completely in favor of your ideas and far more... I can help you with my "Walls of ideas and important things not yet discussed" but that's all I can do.

Since I'm already doing much around here as it is... I hope you understand my position... all in favor,,, and yes it can most certainly be done... it's just a matter of tagging the correct people to get involved.

I care about the needs of others and meeting those needs... if it affects them... it affects me.

I am an Optimistic Realist... always the Pragmatic Dreamer... in other words I like thinking about how to actually get that amazing idea done.

I like to point out problems hidden beneath the surface... and their parallel solutions.
