I would be interested in knowing myself, the shuttle and station ships are really nice.

You can export the assets for a ship by

1) launch game
2) mouse over 'mods' in the main menu
3) you'll see the option to "export assets" beside it click that
4) choose th asset you want to export,
5) export the texture or the textures and mesh (depending on what you want to do)

Go into whatever thing you want and edit either the textures to reskin, or the mesh to make a totally new ship.

So its possible, though obviously someone has to take on the quite difficult task of doing the reskin
