[Mod] Survival
Been playing This War of Mine since the its release, but only started seriously modding it recently... A few weeks later, "Survival" is finally released !

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=865198214
This is the first large scale mod bringing both gameplay, cosmetic changes and, most importantly, new scenarios. Main Features :

- New scenarios: "Liam(Marko), Katia and Anton". More difficult than any of the default scenarios, it will test your limits with an extremely cold winter, brutal outbreak, scarcer resources and more frequent attacks.

Second one is "Zlata, Arica and Kalina": Harder version of "Zlata, Emilia and Kalina" it replaces, with a longer and harsher winter, and more shelter attacks, but not as much as the first one.

Different ways to win, no way to lose : Will you just shelter inside and wait for the hard days to pass, or go around and fight for your survival ?

The mod only replace two scenarios ("Roman, Katia" and "Zlata, Emilia, Kalina"), and don't affect any other. You can still play whichever you want, even a custom one, and have all the others features.

- New characters: Alternate faces/portraits for most of the roster, and a new selection screen to go with it. All to make the game "feel new" again.

All of them were "unused" portraits of the game, and are now all playable in any scenario, and featured in the new 'Survival' scenarios.

- Cleaner portraits overall: Removed "old photo" effects like black ink drops and cracks on most portraits and tuned down the in-game effect. Comparison: link[imgur.com]

- And some gameplay changes, like having more than four dwellers, Franko not coming everyday, medicines being harder to craft, dwellers recovering less easily from exhaustion and depression, exact loot not being shown when scavenging, and more...

All in a effort to make the game less forgiving while keeping the gameplay mostly intact. In that way, no change was made to dialogues, items or anything like that.

Second Chapter:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=879880378
Brings even more challenging scenarios, and the same gameplay changes... With a few exceptions, like disabled sound cues and enemy health bars when scavenging, making it more risky to leave the shelter unprepared. Exclusives scenarios:

“Damian(Bruno) and Boris”: Very challenging scenario taking place during winter only, with extreme cold waves, heavy conflict, and very scarce resources. Also, the radio won't work after a while, leaving you in the dark concerning the outside.

“Dimitr (solo)”: Most challenging scenario yet, with both a very brutal outbreak and harsh winter. Dimitr/Roman starts alone in an empty shelter, and only a few will want to help or join him while the city is plagued with looters.

Other mods :
- Endless War: Adds an “endless mode” to the game, with successive winters, progressive difficulty, and the same gameplay changes than "Survival"
- Harsh Winter: As its name suggests, makes winter harsher. Not very recommended for early or extreme winter scenarios (cf. second post of this thread),
- Custom Portrait Pack: Optional pack adding new custom characters, and cleaner portraits without having the main mod.

I'll give it a try later, I will play with no mods and maybe record it to show my suffering hahaha. let's see how it goes :sunglassesDoge:

Good luck. Can't wait to see if you make it out alive.

For the record, I tested the new scenario with "Harsh Winter" enabled, and almost lost both Katia and Anton in the very first week. I had to spend all my food on them to keep them alive (barely), leaving Liam(Marko) starving and unable to run. Not the greatest idea I admit.

Alright, third scenario is working, so I updated all my other mods, notably "Endless War", now fully tested and balanced up to 250 days (not sure if anyone will still be playing past that point...), and "Custom Portrait Pack" with all cosmetic changes done in Survival, like cleaner portraits in-game.

Gonna take a break before testing the scenario, but it should be here by the end of the week :steamhappy:

24/02 Edit: Or maybe not this week, I barely started testing the new scenario, dunno when I will finish it (new "scarcer resources" mechanic drives me insane, I had to tweak a few things before playing for real). On the bright side, you now have more time to actually play them xD

Instead, the new update will bring a lot of fixes, especially since the mod wasn't updated since its release. Ported a lot of things from "Endless War", like the kid bug making them join just a few days apart, and now they actually don't get depressed over a minor injury (game bug).

I streamlined both "Endless War" and "Survival". They will now both have the exact same gameplay features, just different scenarios. Makes it easier for me to update them (also in case of new game update/dlc :steammocking:).

Survival 1.1: First Update

First major update is here, bringing lot of fixes to make sure both scenarios work as planned.

I’ll try and update the mod on a two weeks basis from now on, or at least as long as I’m still working on new features...Starting next week with a full portrait overhaul. (Most of them still have black ink drops on them, so I try to remedy that. It’s a very easy fix, but there’s still a lot of them)

Next will be the third scenario featuring full winter and scarcer resources, and I plan to release another small mod at the same time, adding more challenge for all default scenarios.

Since current tools don’t allow having more than two scenarios at a time, I'm gonna have to separate the mod in two parts in the future. Good news is, this makes it possible for me to add my all-time favorite character to the game, 'Ethan' (or “male#8 from scenario editor”, but that’s an awfully long name). Hard choice between the two main characters, as they will both replace Marko, hands down the real best character (with Pavle of course).

Stay tuned !

A very good mod that actually works- and adds much appreciated difficulty. First attempt I was in such a bad way I had to re-start, which hasn't happened to me in forever. Meds are hard to come by, and your people are often sick (winter, ect). A noticed a longer time to build up. I took the boat on day 35, so I did not get two months+ out and really have to scramble for components. I do not own the Children DLC and could not play the second scenario. Children did show up, but left during the first overnight
Kierk 6 27 Feb, 2017 @ 5:22am
Thanks for the feedback. I tried to make it playable without the dlc, but the second scenario was actually my first attempt at making one. And since it's based on "Zlata, Emilia, Kalina", it's designed around having a kid right from the start. I didn't know they still showed up though xD

Next scenarios won't have children, they'll be hard enough without (but a few of them may still join the shelter mid-game).

Edit: Everything else you said is encouraging, this is exactly what I want, meds hard to come by, longer build up, etc... I balanced it so you never have too much of anything.

And by taking the boat by day 35, you only missed like one or two weeks. I try not to make longer scenarios, because once you are settled with a garden and everything, there is not much challenge. Although, if anyone wanna play longer, then "Endless War" covers that xD

This thread will only be updated for major updates from now on. Meanwhile, you can still follow any progress to "Survival" directly in the Change Notes.

02/03 Edit:

Survival 1.2: Portrait Overhaul

All portraits except most custom characters have been edited, they look much better now. No more black ink or anything , here's a little comparison: http://imgur.com/a/Y6TlF

Speaking of which, the new characters fits really well imo, I wonder why they never made any of them playable with The Littles Ones dlc. And by the way, I've been playing them in scenario editor since they released the modding tools, so the names I gave them kinda stuck, never easy to name a character just based on their face and backstory.

Looking through an older build of the game, I found another Ethan's portrait (that's the third counting the one where he wears glasses). I'll use it for his picture and update all screenshots by the same occasion today.

Survival 1.3: Scarcer Resources

Damn I love this game. That last playthrough I did was just crazy, even more than Liam's.

I finally figured out how "disappearing loot piles" works, but instead of keeping it for late-game, like it does normally, I made it happen right from the start, since you're starting in winter and all. Everything is tied on how the conflict is going e.g. the heavier the conflict, the more people get desperate and become thieves or looters, and that means less loot around the city. I like this mechanic, makes the game feel more "real".

I also found out you can make "double" visit, meaning two people joining you at the same time, a bit like children joining along their parents in TLO. Both mechanics work very well and make it the most tedious and enjoyable scenario so far.

Only one story left, with Roman, but i don't think I'll test it before a while, so I'll just release it as is. The difficulty might be off a little, but hey, you got Roman, everything should be fine xD

09/03 Edit:

Survival 1.4: Second Chapter

My work is mostly done now, thanks to everyone for following me this last month, it was very fun. You can be sure I'll continue to support this mod as far as I can. Here's the info on the new scenarios if anyone missed it, it'll be released in just two days from now :

"Survival: Second Chapter", two exclusives scenarios and another new character :
- Third scenario, with Damian/Bruno and Boris. Winter only, heavy conflict. You will need all your skills to make it through this interminable winter. But you ain't the only ones sharing the same fate. Civilians, rebels, soldiers, everyone is desperate to survive.
- I rarely ever play with Roman, it's time to change that! As Roman/Dimitr (solo), you are not afraid to steal or kill to survive... But you are a deserter, and as such, no one will be there to help you in return. You'll have to rely on yourself alone.

Survival 1.5: Final Update (or is it?)

Got back into the game already, it was a very small break lol

I'm testing different things to add to the mod, here's the list so far (31/03 Edit: now complete):
  • Alternate start for all new scenarios. They either have different starting characters and/or possible recruits/quests. Ex: In Liam's, Christo and Iskra never make it to the shelter :'(

  • New scarcer resources system: water is now rarer during winter, meds and black market commodities like cigarettes during outbreak, and fixed plants disapppearing completely from all locations. Also, scarcer resources for all other scenarios (Second Chapter only).

  • Dwellers recover less easily from fatigue. By default they recovered two levels a day (very tired -> normal), they now need 25% more time to recover (1.5 level/day). Same by night. Christo's ability might actually be useful now, since it lets him recover faster than anyone.

  • They also recover less easily from sadness/depression e.g they stay sad/depressed longer unless they talk to someone. War is depressing, I don't see what they are content about.

  • They now have a chance to trigger traumas like insomnia when sad. It was only when depressed before... For the most part at least. Yes, I'm talking about you Roman.

  • Added new endings events for all quests and reworked them so they appear more frequently. The more there is, the better, I can listen to the ending credits all day.

  • Fixed ending triggers for some characters: Zlata and Anton get bad endings like everyone else, and Dimitr/Roman may finally have a good ending (if he can resist the urge to kill).

  • (Second Chapter only) Immersive mode disabling visual cues like enemy health bars and positions when scavenging, making it more risky to leave the shelter unprepared.

  • (Second Chapter only) Dwellers start and join in a worse shape in all scenarios.

Also tweaked shelter attacks in "Dimitr solo", especially early game. It was too punishing for anyone trying to make it without hiding supplies. Remember you can make a secret stash somewhere, no need to stock everything inside the shelter unless you can defend it.

---

28/03 Edit: Finished playing my latest scenario, lost Dimitr in the last weeks to depression, but other than that, difficulty wasn't too bad. Using "Just look at' em" and "Harsh Winter", Dimitr only got seriously wounded twice I think. And that may be because I tweaked enemies health and running speed a bit, just for fun :steamhappy:

Real problem was resources, not being able to recruit Boris or Marko is seriously handicapping, I struggled to upgrade anything. Luckily you get enough things to trade to compensate the lack of materials.

An update will be released this week. I'm doing another run before that. With someone else than Dimitr so I can properly test the changes done to depression/fatigue.

Final update has been released, changelog is in the post above. I will add language support for all the new events tonight, but other than that, there won't be any update for quite some time. Or at least no new features or scenarios, just some minor tweaks whenever I find the time to play. There is always something that can be improved.

P.S I find it funny that the "Immersive mode" was one of the first things I wanted to implement, and I only found a way to make it work a few days ago. It is now the best feature imo. Not being able to see where enemies are makes a huge difference to the overall eperience of the game.

By the way, I highly recommend you to check out "Just Look at 'em", it takes things even further by disabling all hints about your character's current state. I usually play with this mod, "Harsher Winter" and "Music". Perfect when you want to keep the gameplay mostly intact.

Mod Goal

The mod has been released for quite some time now, and thanks to your support reached 1500+ suscribers, which is a lot more than I hoped when I started making this mod. It was only supposed to be one scenario at that time, and I wasn't even sure to release it publicly. Now it's so much more and I'm really happy how it turned out and how well it was received so far.

---

I figured it's time I give more details about each scenario. Beware, SPOILERS AHEAD:

- "Zlata, Arica, Kalina": first attempt at making a new scenario. It isn't much different from the one it replaces "Zlata, Emilia, Kalina". I just made it more challenging by making the winter longer and shelter attacks more frequent. Here's how every scenario I make looks like before I mod them into the game:
  | OUTBREAK | | WINTER | END DAY     1 7 15 18 24----27 32 37          3 4---6 9---------14 17 19--22 28------32 34 ATK LVL  * ** *** ** *** ** **** Conflict: days 15-18, 24-35 | Outbreak: days 7-14 | Winter: days 18-31 Resources: Plenty | Ceasefire: day 37 Dwellers: Julian days 9-11 -> Anyone but Emilia, Bruno and Roman days 15-21; Five dwellers maximum

- "Liam, Katia, Anton": first real scenario made from scratch, and personal favorite of mine. The idea was to make Liam the main character. Just one man, trying to save other people survive the war. The first weeks are quite tedious, starting right before winter, and then having the outbreak soon after. Everything was done to make the scenario very challenging for anyone else than Liam/Marko. You know, being the best scavenger and all. Of course it's possible to make it without him, but I'm sure you would miss him if he wasn't here for some reason.

- "Damian, Boris": the idea here was to make a scenario with winter lasting the whole game. The army is pushing hard, but the rebels are still holding out. Looters are everywhere, and, because of that, resources are very scarce. You have the best characters right from the start but even that is not enough to make it through unscathed. Crazy scenario, never struggled so much even though I had both Marin, Boris, Bruno and Marko at the same time.

- "Dimitr (solo)": this is an odd one. I don't like playing agressive, but I'm sure a lot of people do. This scenario is for them. All locations are the ones you might expect to have the most "bad guys" to kill.. and also civilians if that's your thing xD In counterpart, I made sure nobody wants to help you, so no shelter trader, no hospital, and only a few characters can join you. Trust me, you wouldn't want Boris or Marko for this game, they would be dead from depression in no time...

And that's all the scenarios I made so far. As you can see, they are quite varied, and I'm not sure what I could do next. If I ever want to make new ones...
