Create and share Maps and Scenarios
Design whole new Maps and custom Scenarios for Ogre and share them with the global Ogre community. Edit a map’s size, define the terrain, set factions, edit deployments, and more.
Just a Quick Question?......
Have you determined what the size limit is for publishing a map and senario? I would hate to put a ton of time into a map to find out it wasn't going to work out. I took a chance on Nuclear Battlfield, as you can see the dimensions are different than most......Let me know. Thanks!

Since you pick the size before starting to edit the map, there isn't much risk of putting any time into editing and then finding out it's too big. I would think if there's a limit, it would not let you create the base map to start with.

Well, I ask the question because others that have created maps have said that they were not able to publish larger maps. I would think there must be a limitation on this sort of thing, so I ask.

We've found an issue with this which will be addressed in the next update - it won't stop you creating the scenario, but you might not be able to publish it. The file size limit was being exceeded with some of the back end files. We've optimised this so once the update is out, any scenario you've previously created should be ok :)

Apologies for any hindrance caused.

Thanks a lot for enquiring!

Thanks Jake. I have not had a problem publishing a senario, but I have heard from other creators that they could not publish because their maps were too big. I experimented with my last two maps, Nuclear Battlefield and Nuclear Battlefield 2, which were a little larger on the ends than most that have been published. I did not experience any problems publishing them; that is why I asked the question about a size limit for a map for publishing. Looking forward to that update.

One more question......Will your new update effect any of the published maps currently; if so, what can we do to help? Thanks Again, Jake.

Well, I finally hit the wall; just created a map that was columms(x) 31 by columms(y) 17, and the senario works fine on my machine, but will not publish. Can't wait for that update......

It's worth noting that an absolute minimum should be two GEV maps side-by-side (in any direction). That would cover the majority of the scenarios out there (although without Cruise missiles and lasers, it's less of an issue). Anything smaller is just disappointing, to say the least.

Agreed!

I am currently working on a new map; I discovered that the max amount of hexs seems to be 40 x 40, after the update. I tried to go a little larger, and the program will only allow 40 x 40 to be used. I hope after the amount of work I do on this new map(which I am still working on) will be able to publish with the scenario that accompanies the map......time will tell......

good luck

Well, I hit the wall again......seems that my 40 x 40 map is even too big to play on. I tried to playtest it and when it got to the point of loading, Ogre was not responding. I even set the sides with 20 infantry and 20 armor points; still not responding after trying to load up.

I suppose that I can go back to the drawingboard and make the map smaller, but I hate to go through that process again......alot of work......just wish I knew what the limitations were before I started to build the map. You would think that it would not allow you to put in the 40 x 40 dimensions in at the start, but it does let you. I am not a programer, so there must be other reasons, either terrain or troop choices that are throwing this into the not responding mode. Whatever it is, I guess I'll try "smaller" next time......

sounds like the next test is 40x40 with no terrain or units and see if it will run.

It also is a pretty good indicator of what the final product will be (ie, single-map scenarios only).

*SIGH*

I guess so......I imagine there are a lot of things to consider; map size, terrain, units size, to add up to the file size to be able to run correctly. I am in the process of trying a smaller version of my map; 25 x 25, to see if that works out......I'll be testing this weekend and I will post my results.

Well, so far, this new map and scenario are working and being tested. The AI just beat me; and in the beginning of my scenario, because of the amount of troops and armor, the AI takes a little time to decide what to do. It is very interesting; the AI never chooses any Marines, only plain Infantry; and if there is a choice of armor points that can buy an Ogre, they always choose other armor, never an Ogre......very strange......

When I am done testing, I will attempt to publish this......hopefully it will publish ok......
