Will modding GC3 still break my computer?
I haven't been able to play this game at all since custom factions came out because having a custom faction broke the game and the game being broken broke my steam and my steam being broken broke my whole computer. With caution, I installed the game on my expensive new laptop but I'm afraid of modding it or even buying dlc for it without knowing that this definitely wont happen again.

Sounds to me like your computer was already broken.

so I won't be spammed with error messages if I download a custom faction leading to my game being unplayable and in turn leading to steam crashing if GC3 is installed?

Error msgs are the fault of the custom civs author or you tried to edit the custom civs and made it incompatable to play. You need to figure out which, either contact the author or put it back to the way it was before you edited it.

alright so I'm hoping that means that some people are modifying the civs outside of the in game editor and causing understandable errors but the way you said it sounds like the in game editor is poorly designed and if I don't want errors I should just never touch the feature at all.

Are you using third part\y mods? Some will cause custom civs to error, disable mods and see if they will play without third party mods. If there are no errors with mods disabled than its the mod causing the error not the custom civ.

this isn't a problem I'm having now, as it says in the original post I haven't played in a long time for fear of it happening again. I was using no mods only workshop content and one I made myself inside the game. the one I created and half of the ones from the workshop all gave me errors.

It is quite possible that some of those civs others made used a third party mod. It will cause incompatibility errors if you are not using same third party mod they made it with.

Suggestion;

Copy civilizations and edit out the changes made with mods of those civs causing your errors and resave them, delete the ones causing the errors to happen.
