As the title says, this is meant to gather suggestions for the level editor in a single topic, instead of scattered posts around the forum. Hopefully that will make things more organized and also help the developers.

I will begin with what I have in mind after making a few dozen maps, in order of relevance. I won't focus on suggesting adding objects that already exist in game like explosive barrels or chains, because I am pretty sure that's obviously already planned for the next patches. My suggestions are more technical and are meant to help dealing with those objects to create a very wide array of possibilities for the players:

  • Add a Select Tool, in which you can click on single objects or click and drag your mouse to make a rectangle selection, and maybe if you hold Control you can add new selections and Alt to unselect. This way the players will be able to move more detailed land pieces without having to delete them and draw everything again. This function should be prioritary, since it's fundamental to deal with any other complex features and is practically required for all my other suggestions.

  • Later, for when more objects are added (like the explosive barrels, background trees, etc), put an "Objects" Tool that will open a list with the available objects. This way there will be more space in the screen for the other functions.

  • When objects like Lasers are added, make sure to leave some options to configure them. For lasers: Set Angle (between 0 and 359), [] Fixed (cannot be moved), [] Rotate, [|||||||| ] Rotation Speed, On/Off Period (0 for always active, something else for lasers like the ones from Laser 8 map).

  • Add Spawners that can generate objects after a defined or random amount of time (like 10 seconds or a range between 5 and 15), limited times or until the match ends. Examples in-game are Western 9 and Western 10 for weapons, Laser 6 for "grenades" and Western 4 for explosive barrels.

A more complete version of this feature would include the option to add motion to the spawned objects. The examples are the parallelepipeds flying at you in Factory 6, 10 and 11.

  • Allow Weapons to have some of their properties edited. It could be useful for maps in which players must race to get a certain weapon: it feels way more rewarding if such weapon has infinite ammo, for example.

  • Add Weapon Altars like in the Halloween boss maps. There could be also an option to make it change between weapons in a random or defined order. That's a very specific example, but let's say I want to make a closed map in which players will only be able to hit each other with a certain weapon, like the Grenade Launcher or the Bouncer. Once their ammo ends, they will be stuck. Instead of creating a pile of weapons, the altars could solve it.

  • Add a Motion Creation System. This is the most complex of all the suggestions and I am sure it will be really hard to make, but it will be worth. This tool would allow players to set motion to their objects or group of objects. I will need some images to explain it better.

Angular: after selecting an object or group, you define a center in which they will rotate around, with an option to set their speed or translation period. This is what it could look like, although I am unsure if the layoult should overlap with the objects. https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1306129797
The inspirations for this function are the bars in Factory 1, Factory 2 and the arena itself in Factory 4.

Phase: In this mode, the objects can be set to switch between movement phases that last certain amounts of time. The layout would be something like this: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1306158912

After selecting an object or group, you add Phase Points in which their centre will move towards. Between every pair of phases, there is an arrow called motion point. In the Set Time function, you can set a Wait Time for phase points before moving to the next phase or set the Speed in the transition clicking on the motion points. The Motion Point can be set to "reversal" so it will make the opposite movement after the next phase.

    Wait Time: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1306160175
    Set Speed: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1306160668

This image shows how Factory 9 would be recreated in this system: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1306161606
It begins waiting a few seconds, then it moves towards phase 2. Phase 2 has the same wait time, and then it goes back to phase 1 since its motion point is set to reversal.

I hope this topic can be of some help to improve the game!

I did not. I made those pictures in an image editor to show how my suggestion would look like in the actual game.

Good

A complementary idea for this: using the Select Tool, you could be able to Copy and Paste stuff. It would also help for this:

The land piece in the clipboard could be inserted as an object to be generated by the Spawner. Then, you could spawn not only the parallelepipeds from the Factory stages but also things with any shape.

Suggestion: Allow us to add lava to maps.

I would like to suggest diffrent types of ground (ie. breakable ice vs unbreakable floor).

can we have the breakable/not breakable chains to be able to interact with? those levels are some of my absolute favorites and I would love to make a few maps using them.

another idea: in the editor adding a zoom function where zooming in allows us to be a little bit more precice and zooming out shows the normal map surrounded by gridlines, allowing us to place stuff offscreen.

Speeking of gridlines, those would be something useful to toggle on and off on the normal map editor.

yet another idea, how about a physics toggle where it makes specific parts of the map that you mark as "physics items" where they are affected by gravity, the thruster, etc.

"fuse tool": where you can stick things together and if they are "physics items" than they move around as a single entity. (first thing that comes to mind is being able to stick spikes to boxes and shoot them towards other players)

That's all I have for now, however I'll be sure to post if anything else comes up, maybe it'll give others ideas for some tools they'd like.

Maybe zombie spawners
(like snake spawners)
except different types of zombones

Breakable Ice, backround objects, chains that can be attached to a loose type of ground that is effected by physics, Lava, various things that are in the maps by landfall that you cant use in the mapmaker, an undo button

An undo button would be a godsend.

I'd be down with any of these suggestions for the level editor would make it a lot more robust.
EnderCatCore 18 27 Feb, 2018 @ 6:27pm
maybe add some teleport pads? if it would work

I just still wish they would let us put in the laser sword :P
But seriously, I feel it would be nice to have everything the regular levels can have: giant rolling spike balls, swinging spike balls, CHAINS, spike platforms, laser platforms, and most important of all: A PLACEABLE VOLLEYBALL. Like the one from the one factory map. Also placeable boss pumpkins (boss vs boss battles :D)
