An alternative to prefab monsters
The tutorial encounter gets its monster cards using the "Get Card(s) by Prefab" function. So for my first shot at my encounter I did the same.

There's nothing wrong with this function, there are times that it'll be the best choice (basically any time your encounter demands a specific monster) but on my second pass I realised that for me, it's going to be the worse choice most of the time.

Instead I've switched to "Get Card(s) by Condition" using cardtype "monster" and the condition "card keywords" to pick a monster with the keyword "thief" "norse" "empire" or "undead" depending on the encounter (with the target variable and so on set up as in the other function).

This has the advantage that your encounter card has more variety because the monster isn't the same each time, but also scales the encounter to the challenge that the player is attempting. If they're on an early level of the game your encounter will feature early monsters, if they're at the endgame with the snazziest equipment then your encounter will feature endgame monsters. That should keep it relevant to players across the spectrum rather than fixing the encounter for one particular sort of player.

There's also a MonsterType condition, but I've not been able to get that to behave the way that I'd like so far. I get the impression that it'd be possible to use that to do things like "Gimme one boss card and two mook cards" which seems like it'd be handy once I've got the hang of how that works.

The MonsterType condition is mostly for choosing from factions as far as I can tell. If you want one boss and two mooks, finding a way to get monster cards from different tiers of card sets is probably the way to go.

I haven't dabbled into this myself yet, but I can give it a look later today and see what I come up with. :)
