Although i agree such a game is ill timed i dont think it deserves the fuss the likes of the BBC and others place on it.
Here we are talking setting, not action and this is precisely whats at stake as how long before someone else another time further down the road, blackballs another game purely on the setting being realistic to real life as do remember, censorship of game violence is constructed around how human a character is. By removing the title, maybe the school emblem at the entrance/uniform,etc, it would be just a building like any other building.
There is also the point given a bit of work and multiplay, a chance to turn this game into a chance to aid children in avoiding a school gunman if it was turned into a hid and seek venture not that dissimular from say friday the 13th.
Its already bad enough the blame gets put on the lawful access to guns rather than the person behind them all because the latter is just to hard and costly to address (in other words politicians, anti gun persons are just plain lazy) so lets not go down the road of using a setting as gun violence and death happens everywhere so if you can ban it because its a school, you could argue the same for a office building, apartment and even just the street.
I hope you see what im getting at here.
Unbelievably it seems they have (it's in the store due for release 6 June). I wondered whether the BBC and anti-campaigners had exaggerated the whole thing, & made a bit of a fuss about nothing. The graphic marketing preview video makes it clear they must certainly havnen't. It is truly sick!!
What the hell has it to do with steam. Stop being lazy and go complain to the person who made the game instead of taking the easy and lazy road to trying to get your way like a entitled child (not saying your actually a child as in age).
Steam have (or should) have some sort of ethical/moral responsibility themselves. They're basically no more than a very large store that can choose what they do (or don't) put up for sale in their shop. They're also in the unusual position of having a more or less complete monopoly on gaming sales i.e. a game is unlikely to succeed without such a marketing platorm giving it huge exposure. By placing such a game on Steam it gives it a mega marketing bonus (including to millions of kids) it wouldn't otherwise have.
I suppose you're an idealist that expects the market to fully regulate itself without any outside interference. And that's the way it's should be! What difference do you think my complaining to the author of the game really would make? Sure I can boycott it myself, and dissuade thoses I know from entertaining the idea (though I sincerely hope they wouldn't be interested in such a thing). It's not though going to stop lots of twisted indviduals across the World buying it through Steam. Should it be their divine right to be able to do so?
I don't think its myself that needs to grow up!
We cant go around holding hands of people with violent tendancies by trading away our freedoms on a venture that quite frankly wont reduce such behaviour.
Personally the game looks like a cheap shooter that other than padding out a collection if say going for 12p wouldnt be the choice of most gamers compared to what else is already on the market.
People shouldnt back the banning or boycott of the game or steam for the reason i had originally outlined in this post. Further more shouldnt give lip service as i believe had no one had known, it wouldnt have sold that well.
As for steam, theyre capitalists like any other business and there is no greater profit driver than death and misery, just ask governments who drag us to war while making weapons of death to sell everywhere.
At the end of the day its just another crappy designed game with no substance and that and only that is my reason for disliking it.
And I think there-in lies the problem. Capitalism is completely out of control, running riot especially in the Western World. There surely becomes a point where it can't be allowed to continue to do so, in such a way that is often to the detriment of large sections of society (generally the most vulnerable). Like it or not, some reasonable checks & balances are needed to avoid such harmful behaviour continuing. The system is simply unable to responsibly regulate itselves - if it could then, interference in the market would indeed be unwarranted.
I agee if there hadn't been such a media storm raising awareness of the game, then its sales would have been likely much more limited. But at the same time, just being available on Steam, meant it was only a matter of time, before this unwanted further exposure happened. Steam are further profiteering from such a 'scandal'.
I would have little concern should the author have tried to sell his ceation via his own website & via his own paid for marketing/advertising. That is genuine freedom of expression of any individual (as unpalatable as it might seem to others) - but it would most likely have failed miserable following such a sales route. But instead Steam have chosen to profit from this content, by giving it their loose 'approval'.
As you say an essentially crap game, that without major free advertisining would most likely fail miserably in number of sales. Though now (unless it is removed from Steam) I suspect both the author & Steam will benefit signficiantly from sales. To my mind that's not a healthy free market.
Socialism/communism was no less corrupt.
Infact all capitalism is was to take the corrupt element of socialism and apply it as acceptable practice for anyone. Wouldnt be bad idea if everyone had the same in assets and opportunity but of course they didnt and why the corrupt then and are still the corrupt today dew to already having wealth and power.
I totally agree with you on how its running riot as without perpetual fluid motion back to the bottom it can all only go one way but thats all a story far to long for us to consider here, especially over a game thats lets face it, crap.
I have believe it been given free a game way back (didnt research it so didnt know) thats basically throwing poo about everywhere. What the F right. Steam need to get their act together to back innovation only instead of being a leg up of any wanna be game desigher looking to pedal trash and that includes AAA titles.
They wont as like you said, its a cash in no matter how it sells badly, they pull the same stuff on the trading/market while giving us all a website that looks and works like a government website back in the 90s.
As for another website, once word got around, the server owners would have recieved the same pressure to remove it or if he had a server he owned, IPs to block it like they do torrent sites and such.
As we both agree, the game is trash irrespective of theme but im sick and tired of having to give up or be prevented from stuff all because of a few rotten eggs who are a bad seed among such healthy ones. Im not into stuff like the movie hostel or saw, i dont relish in being uncessarly vindictive in games but i want the right to make my own choices as im sure you would.
