the udk 3 level editor that is included with VCD has all of the vanilla assets to play with which is alot of fun:)
steam library press play button choose level editor then start building:)
one warning=do not save any vanilla package in the game only save your map file!
if editor ask to save something that is not your map then press dont save=
this prevents one spending hours fixing the game after one broke something by saving something they should not have saved:)
as for 3rd party assets sometimes you can find a few free for any use licence assets on turbosquid but they hard to come by
also if very lucky if ask devs of other udk 3 games for permission to use thier assets and if they say yes and if thier content works in VCD's level editor then yeah go for it!
on the other hand adding heaps of 3rd party content is very costly in terms of workshop cloud space=you might fit 5 maps or even 2 maps if ones map was entirely made from 3rd party content:)
its just alot less hassel to use the vanilla assets as a massive variety of stuff can be used
for this house of horror is a must have as it has alot of useful assets
one can also copy n make new materials like say a pink orange or purple glass tank and a massive list of anything one can think of to reskin things with!
if ya know how to make 3d models in blender (blender is free)
or if ya own 3ds max one can make thier own content and import it into the game!
ones mobile phone is great for recording sound with to use in the game
so is phone camera for new textures when the need arrises:)
android phone easier to get your new stuff onto ones pc unlike apples locked camera roll!
still if interested in making a map for vcd this a good place to start=
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=323918819
youtube tutorials for unreal tournament udk3 is also helpful although vcd does not have alot of the stuff thats in ut3 esp when it comes to kismet (visual scripting that makes the magic happen when it comes to making stuff do things)
also the community content forum here and the what are you up to thread has loads of stuff to read that isn't in the level creation guide
its still possible to make a doom map without using any doom content at all lol:)
one can even make a portal map without using 1 thing from portal!
other map makers here are very helpful
(usually its me and cannonfodder who offer help to new creators as well as the devs:)
i found it scary at 1st then i ended up being a teacher to other new creators
now us creators pool our ideas together and share stuff we made to make our levels get better n better=oh so fun
VCD a very fun game esp when ya can make your own levels
there is no ue4 support VCD is unreal engine 3
now that job interview i went for today is over i can now go n fix some more bugs in stonehenge
a creators life gets busy=you want compliments n no complaints about ones map=makes life easier and is the goal of a vcd workshop map that employee of the month works in:)
having 26 vcd maps to look after is a task in itself until one day i end up with 40 levels=ahhhh my head:)
if ya get used to modding this game like i have then before ya know it youl know more than whats in the level creation guide:)
the 1st time i opened the editor i said to self=umm whats this and umm how the hell do i do that=if at 1st you fail try try again:):)
at the end of the day modding and making maps is heaps of fun in VCD
playing your own maps in multiplayer also brings you alot of joy along with more bugs to fix xd:)
now to go n mop up two uncleanable blood splats in stonehenge for the next hour or two n run another map update again=it never ends:)
don't get your hopes too high for me. i've just barely starting getting a grasp on the editor, but i do plan to chip away at it until i can create something acceptable.
also, i don't remember sending you a friend invite, but if you're offering, i guess it would be nice to have an expert handy if i was faced with something impossible. i'm not exactly the chatty type either, so no worries there.
anyways since i posted another list of elusive vcd bugs
another question for Blackeagle=
to press or not to press mark as dirty or resave and submit for=
GP_Horror_Janitor01
for me solution is the cancel button so i dont screw up the GP_Horror_Janitor01 package????
i think its the janitor horror character masks like face paint etc did that get changed in a game update???
should i just open horror map and copy new name of mask material and use that to clear the warning???
and Akytalusia yeah im allways here and if ya do make a level im happy to give out loads of tips on things in regards to map making in vcd that isnt in the level guide
ie=help in fixing ones map if its got strange bugs etc
lol n yeah im good at writing messy books! if only my cursor was a mop in the steam forums:)
i also just fixed stonehenge for you patch is up:)
i also disabled blood sticking to the trees as all decals were glitching out on tree trunks!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
some more for Mr Eagle:)
oh yeah i forgot those two blood splats that are invisible in stonehenge map!
after the last game update it seems that all blood drag marks/drag mark decals turn invisible while looking at them on certain angles=
(strange it does this right in the centre of lightnmass volume n nowhere else ???)
even while using the plopper tool this happens???
thats why theres two big circle metal drain lids on the floor in waterworks map to fix that!
i shall delete the offending decals from stonehenge as im staring at it now:)
drag marks were fine and fully visible before an old game update screwed something up with the drag marks:(
its almost like the players camera is clipping inside the drag marks making them invisible ????
even while moving around with the editors camera drag marks dissapear but only while in the middle of lightmass importance volume and its only drag marks all other decals are fine???
i know i told BlackEagle about gp misc stuff resave and submit thing from digsite map
but same thing for gp horror in one of my workshop maps
now to find and change the offending material to clear that editor load warning???
im not sure if its the horror character mask materials the ones that are on the janitor player if they got updated or not??
there was also a few issues i fixed yesterday
several bullet holes stopped working and a few seed beds stopped working after an older game update=these have now been fixed in my levels:)
i also reinstalled vcd a few days ago as its handy for debugging my maps after game updates:)
gees what a week rebuilding lost sorce files to update my old levels esp since those files died with my old hdd that died:)
oh well at least ive regained update privilages to my old maps and fixed a massive list of bugs that is enough to make one scream:)
maybe one for DarkCarnivore's upload guide=
how to make new script files for your map if your hard drive died???
how to get your map back=sub to your own map
(after sub to own map don't unsub or the game will delete it)
disable workshop while testing subbed map ingame so it not download and overwrite new copy with old copy!!!
how to make new rust script for it=read contents of map zip file in rustmods folder
how to get workshop preview image back so the damn thing wont fail to upload=
go to map workshop page click on preview image
copy the link address
open it in firefox n save image to desktop (remove Mod_ at start of jpg file name)
move preview image to modpacks folder
make new rust script and bat file
hooray i can now update a map after the source files died with my old hard drive:)
also while making a new map if its not on steam workshop yet and if you save it ingame it will fail to upload to workshop on your 1st upload try???
how to fix that=
change name of ones map file
change name of int and ini files and edit them to work with new map name
change name of zip file in rust script
upload map to workshop then its ok to save it ingame:)
anyways some good news with steam beta vs rust upload tool=it has been working fine and hasn't s#at itself for over 4 months now=so far so good no failed uploads:)
normal steam=file upload failed happens often so use steam beta its heaps better:)
also subbing to new maps in the last few weeks my game isn't getting stuck on detecting changes forever anymore=says to self dont say that ill jinks it:)
so yeah everything is working fine on my end!
Of course, if they are in their raw format(TGA files, FBX files, etc) then you can probably import them. Asset Packages however are a different story.
Also you can't make maps for VCD using UE4. The files are unlikely to be compatible.
Hmm? Seems like this would be best in a new post. Rather off topic here.
Anways, I'll see if I can remember some of these.
It's easiest for me to make notes of the problems if you put it all in a single thread(and don't delete the posts). That way I can go back to it later for reference(and ask more questions).
after updating lots of maps this week i think ive found everything i could think of
bug wise:)
I got about 1/3 way through doing athenas wrath on ue4, just for myself as a proof of concept, and gave up. I didn't have the time nor incentive to follow it through.
Even if you did, as BlackEagle says, they'll be incompatible with vcd as it's running on a different engine.
