There's a good starter guide up on the official blog ( http://blog.playstaxel.com/creating-mods/ This blog also has several suggestions for free voxel modeling tools) for Staxel on their main site. There's also a very detailed wiki (It's linked on their site thankfully) that helps a ton and gives a good sense of direction when making a mod.
I'm still learning how to mod the game too, but if you'd like I can try sharing anything else I've discovered. Maybe we could throw ideas back and forth? Either way I hope this helps you out!
