Mod main campaign for more customization?

Essentially, how hard would it be to mod the main campaign to permit fully customizable commanders? Say, play Jack Gelder as a Xenoplague or Heritor.

Just to be sure, you know that only the tutorial locks your character looks right?
Other than that, your choices can change the class.
The entire campaigns would break if you could change race and class

Aye, Played most of the way though the main campaign. So modding it to permit you to change race and class is not on the table. Would love to play the Amazon campaign using Voidtech.
