Report a translation problem
The align to grid option in face select mode will align the texture to the current workplane. It doesn't seem to respect displacements though, so you may need to bake the displacement if it's significantly different from the undisplaced mesh.
The texture projection tool also does this, but lets you adjust the projection settings.
The fast texture tool in face select mode lets you do a planar unwrap of the selected faces.
The is also the Egde Peel tool in the edge selection mode, it seems to be designed for the same purpose $seamless_scale was added in the first place.
