What you can try doing, is alter the template before you build it. I'm the same way, in that I can't build anything, but I can re-design stuff and make it work.
So what you want to do is find a building that works for you - layout wise (sleeping area and open space or work area). When it's placed, DON'T BUILD IT YET!
Now you can start re-decorating. If you did a great job, save the template so you can find it in your next game "Akira ACE blacksmith" or whatever you feel like. NOW you build it.
I hope that makes sense.
You are right. 3 of the furnaces are just SO huge. I could get them into the basic geomacer building with walking paths only. That was the Only basic template I could squish them all in..Just barely.
Several of the "High" templates would work, including again, the geomancer because of the higher celings. If you have at least a baby potter (for the bricks) that might be a better option except the build time. ;)
On the geomancer buildings, the bumpouts on the floor are removable which help for floor space.
