New Player, Skinning Animals, Knives vs Shivs

So, am I correct in assuming that shivs don't count as knives for the purpose of skinning creatures for meat? (For the record, I did get the skill from the fisherman and can harvest insect parts, but not the rats around the starting town.)

You may be correct im not sure.
If the Shiv can skin animals it should have that information listed in the stats.
Rusty Knife (and other blades) i know can and it lists this info on stats.
