The user before me makes some excellent points, but I feel I should also reply myself.

How is it NOT less cruel?

1) Dignity - you die to a fellow human being instead of being treated like a barbeque sausage and burnt alive by a machine
2) It is instant - a bullet to the head will kill you instantly and without pain

If you're asking for less cruel, lethal injection would be THE winner, not a firing squad plus there are prisons that do still use that method as an execution.

How about a guillotine, that way you can always stay a head.

The supporters of the process of lethal injection care little to nothing about whether or not it is cruel.
First, it is undignified - you die to some bloody chemicals instead of dying honourably to a soldier's weapon.
Second, it is painful - the chemicals will stop you from moving, but will do nothing to impede you from feeling pain. It's about making the prisoner not flop around for the audience.
Third, it is often botched - physicians refuse to perform this procedure, which leads to states employing people who are not qualified, to the point where they have to poke around looking for the vein
Fourth, the fact that it is still used means nothing. "What should be" and "what is" cannot be confused.
Fifth, even if it did matter - prisons are bringing back firing squads since the chemicals for lethal injection have to be often bought from the black market, or cannot be bought at all.

Of course you get sent to be executed for doing dishonourable things... do you think non-military are sentenced to execution for doing good things?

Have you ever watched firing squad execution ?, you can see pain that victim is suffering and NO they don't use only one bullet on prisoner and also during the execution most of the soldiers shots may miss entirely. Others will hit in places that are not fatal, but could be very painful.

Most shooting victims die only slowly, by exsanguination. The exceptions are when people are shot at very close range, where it would be essentially impossible to miss a lethal spot; or being struck by very high powered or explosive or fragmenting bullets, which can destroy or mutilate large areas of flesh and bone.
There are hundreds of videos showing cartels executing victims with FN FAL rifle and despite the fact that the gun have 7,62mm caliber of bullets, victim still can survive single shot with he's half of the face missing.
That's why during this so called ,,instant" execution there is one officer that always after execution he puts a bullet once again into the victim head to make sure he did not survive it.
