look for differences in these characteristics:
constant/variable bitrate
bitrate
Hz
mono/joint stereo/stereo/surround
what encoder did you use? lame mp3 or something else (if you don't know, what software)? and which online converter?
ps: depending on the software, it might not necessarily be designed to respect the usual association between file extension .mp3 and audio stream encoding as actual mp3... not likely but possible sometimes
