Reluctant to upload.
So, if you've watched twitter, you've probably seen Gaugepunk reponding to something I've been working on. Namely a route based around the 'high line' that once ran in NYC. However, the more I work on it, the more a problem arises.

See, when it started, there were a number of roads available on the workshop. Roads that fit prefectly in with the period, era, and location. So naturally, I made use of them. That was all fine and good... until when I next loaded up the route to find that the roads were missing. What's more... i couldn't find them on the workshop. For reasons unknown to me, the roads had been removed.

That's caused me to worry. Sure, replacing them isn't overly hard to do... but the longer I work on the route, the more I include things like the modular structures, signs, dock doors, windows...or just street fixtures; the more I worry. See, what's to prevent those uploaders from taking their content down?

As it stands, there's no real contract that says "once you upload something to the workshop, it has to remain there" that would prevent people from taking things down. So... i'm at a cross road.

I have an early version of the layout (currently it's just a switching layout, but it I have... or had plans to make it much larger) almost complete and ready to upload. Yet... I'm reluctant to do so. I fear that after uploading, something might get taken down off the workshop, and in doing so cause whole city blocks on the layout to simply vanish.

Am i the only route builder facing this, and what options (short of making structures myself), do you see going forward?

there is a feature absolutely perfect for this!

when you upload a save to the workshop you can choose to include "packaged mods"
you can choose mods from the list of everything you have downloaded and choose which ones will be included in the upload.

If you do this, then any mods you choose to include will be uploaded inside the save file and will be stored in it forever on the workshop. This way people dont need to subscribe to any extra items to play your map.

And if those items are removed, your own upload will still include them.

While that's a valid point, the problem still remains that historically, users who upload things to the workshop, have this tendency to place "licenses" on what they upload. (This being a common practice, for example, on rollinglinemodding.com ) The licenses typically say "Can't be uploaded to other places without permission." While we don't see that happening here on the workshop that much... it is a fear that I have. In that I worry that it won't be long before we see things like that appearing.

Which is kinda what I was getting at. Without something that expressly says "Once uploaded to the workshop, the item must stay unless specific criteria are met..." or something that prohibits people from preventing others from packaging them into layouts as you suggest, I fear that it may make things difficult on users to upload. like I said, I myself, am very reluctant to upload after recent developments, to the point that I'm taking a break from my high line while I work on my real work project for the other game; and then consider going back in to make some 'open source' use as you want, download when you want, share how you want, buildings for the workshop here.

people are always going to be able to have control over their own workshop items, thats just part of steam.

As long as you package mods inside your upload then its future-proof. There's not really anything else that can be done beyond that

Modders that upload props to the workshop have to accept that their models can be packaged in other maps or chose not to upload their work. So with that I would say don't worry.

Guess I'll finish it then. Ha ha. After this minor switching puzzle I'm working on.

Looking forward to it :steamhappy:
