I usually have to unprioritize them in the winter to help maximize my building requests, but sometimes I accidentally re-prioritize them too late. With enough granaries/other food stockpilers, I don't need the farmers to personally distribute their crop, so I don't see the use of having them stand around in their fields during the winter doing nothing.
