Here is what I have learned since I started looking. A lot of people have mentioned this mod to me, however, it is not compatible with the current version of SH.
From what I have gathered, the only salvageable items would be the models. Assuming the original mod author has them and is willing to provide them for the mod to be remade, that would save time on half the work. The real nightmare would be learning how to make a new mod that adds in all the items appropriately.
I am very much so on the fence with this right now. I love the game, I love LOTR, and I would love to merge the two. However, StoneHearth was abandoned. The modding community is very limited to just how far they can go to fix and update the bugs and issues with the game, and in my opinion the engine is lacking.
I have been debating on just remaking the game in UE for the past several weeks now. I have spent a great deal of time on UE, I am making a game currently in UE, and I know my way around the core mechanics of setting up the core elements of gameplay. However, the problem on that front is that I have no idea where the rights for this game are sitting in terms of ownership after Riot bought Radiant. I know Radiant still exists, and I sent them an email to inquire on this and I also sent an email to Riot. I doubt I will get a reply, but I am making that effort.
I can't go ahead and do anything in UE until I know I will be legally safe. So I am stuck. If they come back and don't grant me permission to do this, then I will just have to bite the bullet and remake the mod for the existing game. If luck has it and I do get permission to go for this, then I would rather make the game in UE, port over all its model assets and what not, and just continue where the Devs and ACE left off. Make it modding friendly, expand some of the core content, maybe increase world size and the scope for more gameplay options, etc. Would love it if I could spawn ruins and dungeons in the world for your villagers to explore.
I just can't do anything "safely" right now.
Radiant doesn't exist anymore. As soon as it was bought by Riot, it was absorbed and the only thing remaining was their logo on the game. So always go straight to Riot.
Just change the name and you will be safe enough, noone at Riot cares about this game (from a legal view). Voxel world is not copyrighted... Anyone can do it.
So far my only problem with actually making this game in UE has been making the map. Everything else is relatively easy save for a few loose ends and that is just because UE has so many tutorials that it covers most of the core functions. The map has been a royal B though. I got the UE Voxel Extension, but I have yet to find a solid walk through on how to use the thing. Even worse, I may have to get the $400 paid version just to pull off the map.
But beyond that, yea its doable. What I wanted to keep though was the art style of the game and that was copyrighted by Radiant. Also, I am somewhat positive Radiant is not abolished as a company. To my understanding, yes they were bought by Riot but there was never any clear announcement that I am aware off that officially declared Radiant to no longer exist. If the company legally still exists, it is still possible they would hold the rights to all those assets.
Honestly if I could avoid having to remake every inch of the game then I would like to, it saves time. I don't have the cash to go hiring a whole team and the modding community has been very hesitant to consider a remake for the same reason, time. So, without some willing help from other people who would love to see this game remade and pushed beyond there is was left, I will take every reasonable shortcut I can to reduce my workload if I can. And the cost.
You can always use the game assets as placeholders, them replace them when legally needed
