Sonic 1 and 2 mods

I want to try some mods for the original sonic games, do i need to buy the entire Genesis collection or can I use mods with just the games individually?

I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this

Just buy those games (but sometimes you're required to have more than just one) and you'll be fine.
