Real life question (UK): the Class I "not used" headcode.
What is the story behind this? Manuals for TS locos always list it and say it is not used, and don't show a picture (presumably it would have all three lights across the bottom row). The only relevant search results I've found are online copies of the TS manuals themselves.

Was it simply to avoid confusion with the numeral 1? If so, what could it be confused with, or was it just a precaution against the potential of unforeseen consequences?

In real life 'Class I' was not used. Today's airline seats also have no 'seat I' probably for the same reason, to avoid confusion. Had "Class I' ever been used, it would probably have had the lights/disc configuration of 'Class J.' In turn, 'Class J' would have had the configuration of 'Class K.' So 'Class K' itself would not have existed. I do know that the royal train carrying the monarch used 4 headlamps/discs.

Exactly which locos I searched around 30 TS loco manuals but could not find a references to a headcode not used?

You will also find the reference to 'Class I Not Used' in the following manuals:

CastleManual
Class 24 BR Blue Manual EN
Class 20 Manual
Dock Tank Manual
J50 Manual
J94 Manual
J94 Woodhead Manual
North Eastern Stock Pack 01 manual
SHG GWR Star Manual

And it's quite correct 'Class I' was not used, because it didn't exist. It was skipped to save confusion.

Every time I've wanted to look up headcodes in a manual I've found them quite quickly. Checking over some relevant ones it does indeed seem that the references to Class I are actually a lot less common than I thought! Oh well. Thank you for the response.
