Starting with Hammer and lighting
Hi all. I'm fairly new to using Hammer so forgive the probably n00bish questions.

No matter what I do, shadows keep coming out jagged (or in odd lines) - see examples: https://imgur.com/a/4MwnlSC

Now, this is in the editor, but I've tried building with and without pre-baking the lighting; with and without lightmaps ("normal" and "final" render types) etc; but to no avail. I suspect it's something to do with "vertex based lighting" in the editor, but if that's so, how do I get a real build?

I've not tried uploading to the workshop for real - but I've run from SteamVR home loading as a "local" environment and it still comes out the same so I'm almost certainly missing something.

If anyone could recommend some good tutorials that would be great. I'm struggling to find any good ones that aren't out of date / for different flavours of the editor with different options / are actually complete (e.g I tried following this tutorial but it just ends half way through).

Any help would be great as I don't want to push forward on the maps I'm working on if I've done something fundamentally wrong at the outset.

If you need more info let me know. Thanks.

The issue on the left in the middle image looks like shadow acne from real-time shadows. It's usually caused by low resolution shadow maps hitting a surface at a grazing angle. The light_spot and light_environment entities use shadowed real-time lights by default, so if you want to use baked lighing instead, you'll have to switch the direct component to baked.

For realtime light_spots, reducing the light distance and the spotlight angle can help.

The final build settings will build lightmaps, and the custom type has some additional settings for adjusting the quality. All other settings will use the vertex lighting you build directly in the editor from the menu bar.
