how do you control the dents on a modded cars

You don't. All polygons with "body_paint" material will be dented randomly. Other materials do not dent.

Are you having the massive spikes instead of dents issue? I'm not sure how it's done in blender, but in 3dsmax using the reset xform function solves the dents issue
