Explorable Megastructures
There are many interesting mods around here but it seems that most attention wents to large battlefleets.
I am interested in making a mod that adds more variety and character to the environment.
The first thing that came into my mind was a large structure from a lost civilisation that you can fly through and explore.

I am imagining:
-Specifically themed structural art
-Old turrets
-Unlockable blocks
-Loot
-Enemies
-Ominous music
-Bosses/Space creatures lurking within it
-New missions, f.e. salvaging an object

Is randomly generating a structure a possbility for a programming noob like me?

What are your ideas? please tell me :)

I dont know if this kind of stuff is to be expected on the workshop or through dlc with the current state of the game, I recommend Nimbatus for more planet, turret, and structure action compared to the ship physics sandbox game reassembly.
Cool idea though! Would still love more mods like the planetoids one or something that adds more static structures and the idea of nonspecific unlockable faction blocks sounds cool if done correctly.

I think this is all possible via mods and advanced scripting, but a modder must be willing to implement this. I've thought of creating levels of a solo campaign once, filled with objectives, time limits, and etc. Would be cool to see it happen of course, it'd have to be well advertised among the community too.

missions, loot, bosses, and unlocks are technically possible but it requires a lot of,, uhh, messing with the game's code to accomplish

Thanks for replying.
I have already experienced some engine restrictions when i built an asteroid hangar within the sandbox mode. If i remember correctly, the game began freezing after around 10.000 blocks.
I can set this as a limit and try to build some structures with larger blocks to see if it comes close to what i imagine.
I'm starting with only the structures first. Do some sketches, mess around in sandbox mode and try to program a random generator later.
I know a little bit of higher mathematics, so maybe i can use linear equation systems to swap out block groups with larger ones and reduce the overall block count through several iterations.

The rest of us might know some other technical limitations of the game engine, and could help you.

I just took a look and the asteroid base does look pretty cool! I do like that the base has an external building, and isn't just a hangar.
