I suspect many of the mechanics I need are already in place. The bullet impact sound is already the result of how close a bullet hits for instance. Same goes for explosions and mortars. So most things are in place, but the impact on the character is what I want to remodel. This way indirect fire and mortars can be used like they are supposed (to deny he enemy from shooting back and manuevering). This will also make the machinegun have the role it's supposed to have.
