Yes you can use flyby boarding
take a L freighter with lots of personnel, find target, go ful ltravel drive and try to pass as close as possible to the target, when you are as close as possibole pause the game and launch boarding operation with everything on very high, it will take a while to board the ship though but it works.

You can even get the earlking this way or an Asgard

Wow, so is this possible for taking a Destroyer or large freighter? Or just smaller M and S ships?

for S and M ships, you can only make them bail, there is a chance they will abandon ship when it's too damaged

For L and XL just board them and fly away and wait. You can speed it up by bringing their shields down and doing a bit of hull damage, as long as you dont destroy any components/ships/drones/ you will only get temporary hit and can just wait it out. For S and M you can capture with no rep hit either by just shooting them and getting them to bail, or by comming damaged ships and telling them to surrender (it doesnt have to be you that damaged them...).

Well, I tried yesterday on an Asgard the hit was
TER rep drop from 26 down to 25.
Other than boarded Asgard, I wiped it's companion fleet of 28 fighters and an Osaka.
From where I can see you might face issue would be the FAF Rattlesnakes.
Otherwise, SCA Plunderers are all for pickings regardless the Rep.

The more you board ships this way the more marines (vet + elite) will be put in other ships of the same type.
