I agree with you that we need more compact build on workshop, but not for the reason of been able to access decent tech early on, but for the convenience of mid to end game, fortunately, players are gaining experience form building in campaign, learning the need for each situation, therefore coming up with more campaign friendly build.
Lastly, people appreciate"cool" techs, the coolness is not just about size or fire power, people wouldn't want to download a monster tech that looks lame, if build in good taste, even techs that only has the minimum function can have many people download them, because if you only want functionality, you better build it by your self.
When I started, I was struggling with building a proper defence tower, and that made me check workshop, but I could find nothing helpful. While at certain point you would like to find a crazy mega vehicle to destroy everything, there is almost nothing for beginners. More to that, some techs have incorrect tags, like hovercrafts and tanks marked as "tower" or marked "hawkeye" but have blocks from every other corp in it, which I don't have yet.
