Mods that improve difficulty ?
Hi all,

As most experienced players have probably noticed, the game becomes very simple once you get a very large realm. That said, of course you can give you late-game challenges after creating an overpowered empire, like strengthen your control over your vassals by changing laws and stuff, become the intellectual lighthouse of the world by maxing your technologies, exit the feudal ages by creating a modern economy, etc, etc, etc.

But you can't truly improve the game's difficulty. And by difficulty, I mean two aspects of it, both on the long-term and on the short-term :

- AI having more complex, coherent, and smart planification of their expansion.
- AI taking smarter decisions on the short term.

The actual difficulty settings only add a multiplier to the moral and income values of the AI. Rather than a true improvement of the difficulty (like i said, i define it as a smarter AI), it is just AI cheating, without any change in the acuteness of its decisions.

So I was wandering if there are mods that truely improve this kind of difficulty (so far I haven't found any), or if you heard about moders working on it.

Not that i know of any.

I don't think anyone is able to make the AI smarter, as that would require hacking the exe and that is illegal and game companies nowadays tend to care about stuff like that, contrary to the golden age back in the days...

What is available are mods that make a lot of things harder for the player and the AI, but these mods don't really make anyone smarter. ;)

I can only suggest to try one of the overhaul mods like CK2+ or HIP.
When The World Stopped making Sense and Dark Ages are interesting, but i don't recall these two making the game any harder or complicated.

Thanks for your answer. I am already trying to do some modding, mostly by playing with the define.lua file and others. You can modify some cool stuff, like the AI aggressiveness, the alliances/defensive-pacts mechanics etc.

If those changes are relevant to add "difficulty" to this game I will probably publish them in the workshop. The overhaul mods that you mentionned are, as their name indicate it, rather a rebalancing of general aspects of the game and an adding of really cool mechanics, than a true improvement of the difficulty.

Err...?
They also just did and do what you intend, to modify the existing files, including defines and much more. There are many mods that already changed for instance battle tactics, factions etc. I'd say nearly everything that the files make possible.

Anyway..

If you want to talk to the modding experts regarding that, then i suggest to either ask in the quick-questions thread on modding in the Paradox CK2 forum or on the CK2 Discord channel, for example. See also the Modding page and links there on the CK2 Wiki.

There are a handful modders who might tell you how far you can go with the script and can do and what you can't do for AI planning and smarter decisions, as you put it beforehand.

Good luck.

PS: Regarding automation of actions, there are a few mods in the Workshop, but they are mostly court action (titles, actions) and decsions related. When you search the Workhop for "AI", "auto" or "assistant" you should be able to find those. Maybe they can be used as examples.
