Textures turning up as white when creating a new enviroment,
All my textures are turning up as white when im creating an enviroment through the creator. I'm using blender and have tried baking the textures and exporting the model. I just don't know how to get VD to know which textures to use when creating the enviroment itself through the enviroment creator. :/

I ran into that issue myself. I believe it's related to the fbx exporter in blender. My solution was to import the model into 3ds max, re-apply the textures (use standard texture), and export using the 2013 fbx exporter.

It will likely be necessary to analyze an exported FBX-ascii format, and find out what is specifically causing the conflict in these kind of cases. Do you have access to a copy of 3DS Max?

There's a better way. Been working with a few folk who are trying to export using blender. For the best success, export the OBJ format and everything should work fine - no textures white.

Thanks for the reply!

I've tried exporting my models and textures in blender with both the .obj and the .fbx format and haven't been able to get any of them working. Sometimes the scene shows up and it's all white other times it's just a dark void that greets me. :/ ...oh and the virtual desktop screen is sometimes positioned behind me, mirrored.

Want to add me on steam? I could help you step by step and then we could post the results here.

In the meantime, import your environment into the editor one model at a time (starting with the least complex object). The black screen is typically caused by a mesh not UV unwrapped correctly, a plane not "closed off" into a 3d object (like a cube for example), or a texture not being assigned to an object.

Sorry for not getting back to you yesterday.

I think that would be great idea. Thanks for taking your time! :)
Add me as a friend and whenever we're both online just give me a shout and i'll take the time to show you what i've been trying to do up till now. Hopefully you can give me some pointers in what's wrong. :)

...does that sound okay to you? :)

Sounds fantastic. I just finished creating a good workflow for blender. Looking forward to sharing it!

I get off work in about 9 hours. If you're on steam at that time, i'll bring you up to speed. Got your friend request.

If your itching to get started - Here's a few things that should guide you in the right direction:

You must be exporting your *.obj using "blender render", not "cycles".
The most common reason for the black void is not completely UV unwrapping your mesh. My guess is, if you're 100% sure that you've unwrapped correctly, your using cycles.

Talk soon!

Sound great with the workflow! :) ...unfortunately I think we're in opposite timezones. :/

I'm in sweden and it's 7 pm here at the moment so i'll be soundly asleep when you get back from work.

Maybe you can get me a link to how i best can apply textures in the blender render, and then i can try that tomorrow and post back to see if that will have fixed the issue? :)

Excellent

zyntoxian, did Night ever get back to you on instructions for Blender to VDE? He was going to post a tutorial but ended up having to deal with that Alberta fire situation near where he lives

Oh! :O ...He's alive and well i hope? :S

Well he never got back to me about it, so i tried some tutorials i found on my own youtube, but never got those to work to any real extent.

So unfortunately, no. :/

( Night was very nice and helpfull to me and I thank him for trying to lend a helping hand.
...but in the end i had tp put my project on hold because other real life activites had to take priority. )
