Attack slots and AoE don't affect each other. Each attack has a maximum number of targets it can hit, and for many weapon attacks it is effectively infinite, as long as they have the reach.

Attacks slots is how many characters can target another character at the same time.

AoE will happen if a weapon makes contact during the swing with an enemy's hitbox, and they don't block the correct direction.
