physics props, doors and NPCs render black
As the title says, doors, physics props and NPCs all render black after I build. they look fine in Hammer, and other items look fine and are well lit once built. Sometimes I can get them to render properly when I change something, but so far I haven't been able to narrow down what it is I'm changing that makes the difference. for example they were all black until I added the light probe and that seemed to fix it. then they went black again with the light probe still there.

Anyone else having this trouble and know how to fix it? thanks!

Not completely, but I have leaned more from trial and error: Apparently (and I'm guessing here based on what I'm seeing on my end) any "dynamic" components are affected by this, which basically means anything that moves, including Alyx's hands. It seems that these components are not lit by any omni or spot lights but only by an environment light. Anyway, if I add an environment light, then the dynamic components are lit, but they are way way too bright. Reducing the brightness of the the environment light does not fix it, strangely enough. Instead what seems to tone it down is to adjust the "sky intensity" so it seems the dynamic components are actually maybe lit by the sky!?!? weird. So I finally got the dynamic components more or less properly lit, but now some but not all of my static props look like they are high gloss metallic- even though they are using the simple shader with the roughness dialed so should be matte. I'll be the first to admit my ignorance. I'm hoping that I am missing some simple thing that everyone else knows.
